Authorities in Durgapur, Netrokona, have launched a major operation to remove illegally constructed structures on land under the jurisdiction of the Roads and Highways Department. On Monday, 16 March, a total of 35 shops were demolished in a coordinated effort by local administration and departmental officials.
The operation took place in the Uttarail area of the municipal town, where the encroachments had long obstructed public roads. The joint initiative was led by the Upazila Executive Officer (UNO) Afroza Afsana, assisted by the Upazila Assistant Commissioner (Land) and Executive Magistrate, Md. Mizanur Rahman, and Sub-Divisional Engineer of the Roads and Highways Department, Partha Protim Mitra. Law enforcement officers from the local police station were also present to ensure smooth execution.
According to officials, the demolished shops had been occupying the Roads and Highways Department’s land for an extended period, causing significant inconvenience to pedestrians and commuters. These structures had not only infringed upon government property but also impeded traffic flow in the busy municipal area.
Md. Mizanur Rahman, Upazila Assistant Commissioner (Land) and Executive Magistrate, stated, “Today, 35 shops illegally built on government land under the Roads and Highways Department have been removed. Our efforts to clear encroachments from public land will continue until all such illegal constructions are eliminated.”
Sub-Divisional Engineer Partha Protim Mitra added, “We have identified the encroached areas and will systematically remove all illegal structures. This initiative is part of our ongoing commitment to reclaim public land, and similar operations will continue in the future.”
Local residents welcomed the operation, noting that the removed structures had long caused congestion and disrupted the free movement of vehicles and pedestrians. Many expressed hope that continued vigilance would prevent the re-emergence of such encroachments.
The following table summarises the details of the demolition operation:
| Serial | Type of Structure | Location | Number Demolished | Responsible Officer |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Shops | Uttarail, Durgapur | 35 | Md. Mizanur Rahman |
| 2 | Miscellaneous | Uttarail, Durgapur | Various | Partha Protim Mitra |
Officials emphasised that these efforts are not one-off events but part of a systematic programme to ensure that all government land, particularly that belonging to the Roads and Highways Department, remains free from illegal occupation. Regular inspections and enforcement actions are planned to maintain order and protect public property.
Residents noted that the cleared spaces have already improved road accessibility and safety, highlighting the importance of such operations in enhancing urban infrastructure. Authorities have also urged the public to report any future encroachments to prevent obstruction and ensure smooth traffic flow throughout the town.
This operation in Durgapur reflects a broader commitment by local authorities to enforce land use regulations, maintain public order, and reclaim government property for the benefit of the community.
