In October of this year, there were 486 road accidents in the country, resulting in the deaths of 441 people and injuries to 1,128 others. Among the deceased, 57 were women and 63 were children.
According to the data, in September, an average of 13.9 people died daily, whereas in October, the average daily death toll was 14.7, marking an increase of 5.75% in fatalities.
These figures were revealed in a report published by the Road Safety Foundation on Wednesday (19 November). The report was compiled using data from 9 national dailies, 7 online news portals, and various electronic media outlets.
The report states that 192 motorcycle accidents claimed 137 lives, which accounts for 31.6% of the total fatalities. The rate of motorcycle accidents was 39.5%. Additionally, 98 pedestrians were killed, making up 22.22% of the total deaths. 62 vehicle drivers and assistants were killed, which is 14.5% of the total fatalities.
The report also highlights that 9 nautical accidents led to 11 deaths and 4 people went missing, while 46 railway track accidents resulted in 43 deaths and 12 injuries.
According to the analysis of the Road Safety Foundation, 166 accidents occurred on national highways, 148 on regional roads, 81 on rural roads, 87 in urban areas, and 4 in other locations.
The report further states that Dhaka Division recorded the highest number of accidents, with 121 incidents resulting in 112 fatalities. The lowest number of accidents was in Sylhet Division, where 26 accidents led to 24 deaths.
The Road Safety Foundation observes that most accidents occur due to excessive speed, leading to a loss of vehicle control. To reduce such incidents, technological monitoring and motivational training for drivers are essential. Additionally, pedestrian fatalities are on the rise due to reckless driving and the lack of awareness among pedestrians. The Foundation stresses the need for government initiatives, such as widespread awareness campaigns through media and social media platforms.
