Drone Flights Suspended Nationwide During Elections

In a decisive move to bolster security for the upcoming 13th National Parliamentary Elections, the Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (CAAB) has announced a complete ban on all drone flights across the country from Tuesday, 10 February, to Sunday, 15 February 2026, unless prior permission is obtained. This was confirmed by the CAAB’s Public Relations Officer, Kausar Mahmud.

According to Mr Mahmud, only drones operated by the defence forces and law enforcement agencies will be permitted to fly during this period under special authorisation. Private individuals, corporations, or other organisations will be strictly prohibited from operating drones.

He emphasised the seriousness of the measure, stating, “Violation of this prohibition will result in immediate legal action. This step is a critical component of the security arrangements designed to ensure safety throughout the election period.”

The six-day drone ban is structured as follows:

12 FebruaryThursdayDefence & Law Enforcement AgenciesProhibited
13 FebruaryFridayDefence & Law Enforcement AgenciesProhibited

CAAB officials warn that unauthorised drone activity during this period could pose significant cyber-security risks and potentially disrupt the electoral process. To mitigate such risks, authorities will maintain strict surveillance throughout the six-day ban.

Security experts have noted that drone use during elections is not only a potential threat to safety, but can also affect large public gatherings, thereby complicating crowd management. Consequently, the temporary suspension of drone operations is regarded as an essential measure by both the Election Commission and national security agencies.

While the ban may temporarily disrupt drone-based commercial activities, the CAAB has emphasised that ensuring voter safety and safeguarding democratic processes takes precedence. Citizens and organisations are urged to comply fully to avoid penalties and ensure a smooth electoral process.
