Former JNU Student’s Body Recovered in Old Dhaka

Authorities in Dhaka recovered the body of a former student of Jagannath University (JNU) from a hostel in the Dhupkhola area of Old Dhaka on Monday morning (16 February). The discovery took place around 10:45 a.m. in a six-storey building where the student had been residing.

The deceased has been identified as Imran Nabil Pramanik, a student of the Islamic Studies Department, enrolled in the 2016–17 academic session. His family home is located in Sundarganj Upazila of Gaibandha District. According to university officials, he had been living in a three-person hostel room, but at the time of the incident, his two roommates were away to vote in local elections, leaving him alone.

Professor Muhammad Tajammul Haque, Proctor of Jagannath University, stated, “Upon receiving the news of Imran’s death, we immediately went to the local police station. Imran shared the hostel room with two other students. They had left for the day, and he was alone in the room when this tragic incident occurred.”

Gendaria Thana Officer-in-Charge (OC) Golam Mortuza confirmed the incident, saying, “Based on information provided by his roommates, we visited the scene and recovered the body, which was found hanging from a fan with a towel tied around it. His family has been informed. The body is being sent to the morgue for autopsy, and following the post-mortem, it will be handed over to the family.”

The OC added, “Preliminary investigation suggests that this may have been a suicide. The room door was locked from the inside. Conversations with the family indicate that the deceased had been suffering from mental stress.”
