In a development that has stirred the local political landscape, the national flag of Bangladesh was seen flying atop the Bogra District Awami League headquarters on Monday. The incident occurred at the party’s office located in the city’s central Shatmatha area, a site that has largely remained abandoned since the significant political transition on 5 August 2024.
The flag was first spotted by locals at approximately 4:30 pm on 16 February 2026, affixed to a plastic pipe on the second-floor balcony of the building. Situated adjacent to the district office of the Bangladesh Students’ Union, the building serves as a symbolic hub for various political organisations. Despite the public nature of the site, the exact moment the flag was raised remained shrouded in mystery until the party’s local wing addressed the matter digitally.
A Clandestine Act of Defiance
Shortly after the flag was discovered, the Bogra District Awami League’s official social media page issued a statement claiming responsibility for the act. The post served as a bold assertion of the party’s resilience amidst the current political climate.
“Party activists have hoisted the national flag at the Bogra District Awami League office,” the statement read. “No one can keep us suppressed.”
The placement of the flag—positioned precisely between the Awami League and Students’ Union offices—appeared carefully chosen to maximise visibility while minimising the risk of immediate confrontation. Local traders and shopkeepers in the bustling Shatmatha area remained largely tight-lipped, claiming they did not notice any unusual activity until the flag was already aloft.
Chronological Sequence of Events
The following table outlines the timeline of the incident as reported by witnesses and local authorities:
| Time | Event | Observations |
| Morning – 4:00 pm | CPB Political Programme | CPB members present in the building; no flag visible. |
| 4:30 pm | Initial Discovery | The national flag is seen flying from the second floor. |
| Evening | Social Media Claim | Bogra Awami League confirms activists raised the flag. |
| 7:00 pm | Official Confirmation | CPB District President notes the flag’s presence. |
| 8:30 pm | Removal | The flag is removed from the premises. |
Local and Administrative Reactions
The proximity of other political offices added a layer of complexity to the incident. The Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB), which maintains its district office in the same building, had been hosting a programme earlier in the day. Aminul Farid, the CPB District President, remarked, “We were in the office until 4:00 pm and saw nothing. By 7:00 pm, the flag was there. It seems supporters of the Awami League used a brief window of opportunity to carry out the act unnoticed.”
The Bogra District Police have since launched an inquiry into the matter. Md. Ataur Rahman, Additional Superintendent of Police and media spokesperson, confirmed that law enforcement had no prior intelligence regarding the move. He stated that the authorities are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the entry into the building and the subsequent hoisting of the flag.
By 8:30 pm, the flag had been taken down, but the event remains a talking point in Bogra, reflecting the underlying tensions and the symbolic battles for physical presence being waged between different political factions.
