President Alleges Exclusion from Key Government Decisions

In an exclusive interview at Bangabhaban, President Md. Sahabuddin has disclosed that, in the final days of its tenure, the interim government led by Dr. Mohammad Yunus concluded a major trade agreement with the United States without informing the President. According to him, no notification—neither written nor verbal—was provided regarding this critical state matter.

President Sahabuddin emphasised, “Any state agreement must be communicated to the President. This is not merely a matter of courtesy but a constitutional obligation.” He added that previous governments consistently ensured coordination with the President on such issues, a practice that was reportedly ignored by Dr. Yunus.

Foreign Visits and Lack of Coordination

The President also raised concerns about repeated violations of constitutional provisions by the Chief Adviser. Under the constitution, it is mandatory for the President to receive comprehensive briefings following any foreign visits. “During the interim government, Dr. Yunus travelled abroad at least 14–15 times, yet I was never informed on any occasion,” he said.

He further recounted instances when his own foreign trips were blocked, including visits to Kosovo and Qatar. Despite an official invitation from the Emir of Qatar, the President was denied participation. While the Ministry of Foreign Affairs sent formal letters, no substantive consultation occurred.

Alleged Undermining of Presidential Authority

President Sahabuddin alleged that the interim government removed his portrait from Bangladeshi consulates and high commissions worldwide, an act he described as a “state insult.” Additionally, during the Dhaka Reporters’ Unity elections, three press wing officials were forcibly removed, and photographers were withdrawn, leaving the current press wing effectively inoperative.

He also noted that during national days and other major events, his image and messages were deliberately omitted from official communications, reducing public visibility and recognition of his office.

President Sahabuddin described these actions as both a political and personal affront, undermining constitutional continuity. He asserted that the interim government sought to marginalise him completely, limiting public awareness of his role.

The interview sheds light on the political turbulence of the period and highlights the crucial importance of constitutional coordination, transparency, and respect for state office. Despite these challenges, President Sahabuddin stressed his continued commitment to uphold the constitutional responsibilities of the presidency.
