Kushtia-3 (Sadar) constituency Member of Parliament, Md. Amir Hamza, has signalled his intention to intervene directly in the management of government hospitals in the district. He disclosed that a number of complaints regarding the functioning of local medical institutions have been received and that he has already issued directives with specified timelines to address them.
Speaking to journalists on Thursday afternoon following a meeting of the Kushtia Medical College Hospital management committee, Hamza said, “There were several written complaints regarding the Medical College and Sadar Hospital. I have conveyed these directly to the management of Kushtia General Hospital. The authorities initially acknowledged the mistakes and issued apologies. Previously, the issues were beyond our immediate control, but now there is no higher authority above me in Kushtia. Therefore, any matter that arises, please contact me directly.”
Responding to a question from the press, he added, “Doctors are often absent in the Medical College, yet private clinics continue consultations until 11 pm. Complaints have also emerged concerning middlemen and unethical practices related to ‘spirit money’. In all cases of irregularities, report them to the relevant authorities. We will ensure clarity regarding who wields what authority in Kushtia.”
On plans to revitalise the hospital, Hamza stated, “Our emotional focus is the Kushtia Medical College. We want all departments to operate fully. In today’s meeting, which lasted two and a half hours, we discussed several issues, and some decisions have already been made. I hope that within the next few days, at least one piece of good news will reach everyone.”
His statements have quickly circulated on social media and various news outlets, prompting public debate and criticism. Addressing this on his verified Facebook page early Friday morning, Hamza wrote: “Dear fellow citizens and supporters, wherever there is media trial or harsh words directed at me, do not respond in kind. Explain politely or avoid confrontation. A believer’s words protect another believer. Whatever harsh things are said against me, Allah is sufficient. I am not perturbed; truth will prevail over falsehood.”
