Dr Mosharraf Vows to Purge Meghna of Crime

In a definitive address to his constituents, Dr Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, the newly elected Member of Parliament for the Cumilla-1 (Daudkandi-Meghna) constituency, has pledged a comprehensive “cleansing” of the Meghna Upazila. Speaking at a political exchange meeting on Sunday, 8th March, Dr Mosharraf issued a stern warning against the “sand-thieves,” drug traffickers, and extortionists who have long plagued the riverine region.

A Policy of Zero Tolerance

Addressing a large gathering of party activists and local citizens at the Meghna Upazila Parishad grounds, Dr Mosharraf emphasised that the era of impunity has come to an end. He stated that he has already issued rigorous directives to the local administration to dismantle criminal networks.

“I am stating this with absolute clarity: our government maintains a policy of Zero Tolerance regarding crime. There will be no sanctuary for offenders, regardless of their political identity or social standing,” Dr Mosharraf declared.

The MP specifically highlighted the issue of “illegal sand extraction”—a lucrative and destructive trade that threatens the structural integrity of the Meghna riverbanks and the livelihoods of local fishermen.

Reflections on Governance and Development

Dr Mosharraf noted that as a river-encircled Upazila, Meghna’s geographical unique challenges require focused leadership. He argued that the region’s most significant infrastructural milestones were achieved during previous BNP tenures, asserting that the area had seen negligible progress over the last 17 years.

With the BNP securing a two-thirds majority in the 13th National Parliamentary Elections, Dr Mosharraf expressed immense confidence in the new administration led by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman. He lauded the Prime Minister’s first 21 days in office, citing several “people-centric” decisions that have garnered national acclaim.

A Vision for the Future

The meeting, presided over by BNP leader Ramizuddin Londoni, also featured Dr Khandaker Maruf Hossain, a member of the BNP National Executive Committee, as a special guest. Other prominent attendees included Azharul Haque Shahin and Mizanur Rahman.

Dr Mosharraf concluded his speech by thanking the voters of Meghna for their overwhelming support, urging both the administration and party workers to transcend partisan bickering in favour of visionary nation-building. He reiterated his belief that under Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s stewardship, Bangladesh is poised to become a modern, stable, and highly developed state within the next five years.
