Iran has officially confirmed that it will not participate in the upcoming FIFA World Cup in the United States, citing ongoing geopolitical tensions and recent military confrontations in the Middle East. The announcement was made by Iran’s Sports Minister Ahmad Donyamal, ending weeks of speculation over the nation’s participation.
Despite an invitation from United States President Donald Trump, Iran has decided against attending the tournament, emphasising that the current conditions make international travel and sporting competition impossible.
Minister Donyamal told national television, “Our leader has been assassinated by a corrupt foreign regime. In the wake of this, participating in a football competition is not conceivable. In just a few months, our nation has faced two wars, resulting in thousands of casualties. Attending the World Cup under these circumstances is out of the question.”
The decision follows the intensification of conflict in the region. On 28 February, a joint strike by the United States and Israel resulted in the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, prompting retaliatory attacks by Iran across the Gulf. American military bases in Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Qatar, and Kuwait were reportedly targeted, heightening regional instability.
The FIFA World Cup is scheduled from 11 June to 19 July and will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Iran had been drawn to play New Zealand and Belgium in Los Angeles, with a match against Egypt in Seattle. With the team’s withdrawal now confirmed, the tournament organisers may have to revise the group stage fixtures.
| Iran’s Scheduled Matches | Location | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Iran vs New Zealand | Los Angeles, USA | Withdrawn |
| Iran vs Belgium | Los Angeles, USA | Withdrawn |
| Iran vs Egypt | Seattle, USA | Withdrawn |
Previously, FIFA President Gianni Infantino had indicated that President Trump personally assured Iran of a safe and welcoming environment for their team. However, the recent announcement from the Iranian Sports Ministry suggests that political and security concerns outweigh these assurances.
Sports analysts now anticipate potential adjustments to the World Cup group stage. Iran’s withdrawal underscores how regional conflict can have far-reaching effects, directly impacting international sporting events and the global football calendar.
