Tragic Drowning Claims Two Meherpur Children

A heartbreaking accident in the village of Mailmari, located in the Gangni Upazila of Meherpur District, has claimed the lives of two young children after they fell into a pond while playing. The incident occurred on Tuesday, 16 March, at approximately 1:00 pm, at a pond owned by local farmer Abbas Ali.

The victims, aged three and three-and-a-half years, were identified as Adib Hossain, son of Abbas Ali, and Yousub Ali, son of Akash Ali. According to local residents, both children had been playing near the edge of the pond when, in a moment of inattention, they slipped into the water and went missing.

The Officer-in-Charge of Gangni Police Station, Uttam Kumar, stated that the bodies have been taken to the police station. He added that, since no formal complaint has been lodged by the families, permission for burial will be granted. Police officials also emphasised the need for greater vigilance by both families and local residents to prevent such tragedies in future.

Local sources note that the pond is situated in the centre of the village and lacks any safety barriers, rendering it particularly hazardous for young children.
