A local court in Satkhira has ordered the remand of a prominent Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami leader and his associate into judicial custody, following their involvement in an extortion and assault case linked to an internationally funded coastal protection scheme.
Haji Mohammad Nazrul Islam, the sitting chairman of Burigoalini Union Parishad in Shyamnagar Upazila, surrendered alongside his associate, Bishwajit Mondal, after the expiration of a six-week interim bail previously granted by the High Court Division. Presenting themselves before the Chief Judicial Magistrate’s Court of Satkhira on Monday, 10 August, the duo sought a formal extension of their bail.
However, following an extensive hearing, Chief Judicial Magistrate Mohammad Saidur Rahman denied the petitions, ordering that both men be dispatched immediately to prison pending trial.
Infrastructure at Risk: Allegations and Regional Context
Pabitra Kumar, the legal counsel representing the prosecution, argued forcefully against granting bail. He warned the bench that releasing the primary suspects would jeopardize the execution of vital public infrastructure, risking further unlawful interference and physical intimidation against construction crews on site.
The criminal charges trace back to an incident detailed in a First Information Report (FIR) lodged on the night of 25 May by Mohammad Jalal Uddin, legal officer for R-Rad Corporation—the engineering firm contracted to build the structural defenses. Chairman Nazrul Islam stands named as the principal perpetrator, alongside his elder son Abdur Rahman, Bishwajit Mondal, and a group of 20 to 25 unidentified individuals.
At the heart of the dispute lies a critical flood-control embankment project in East Durgabati, an exposed stretch within Shyamnagar Upazila. Financed by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and overseen by the Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB), the civil works aim to fortify vulnerable coastal settlements against riverbank erosion, severe tidal surges, and recurrent tropical cyclones. The coastal belt of Satkhira, situated adjacent to the Sundarbans, remains exceptionally susceptible to marine disasters, making timely engineering interventions a matter of vital public safety.
According to the FIR, Chairman Nazrul Islam and his network systematically demanded illegal monetary pay-offs from the contractor over a prolonged duration. The situation boiled over when site engineers were physically assaulted, forcing a complete halt to civil works.
Defense Rebuttal and Hostility Against the Press
Rejecting every charge listed in the police docket, Haji Mohammad Nazrul Islam vehemently maintained his innocence outside the dock, characterizing the legal proceedings as a politically motivated conspiracy designed to destroy his standing in the community.
Tempers flared within the court precincts shortly after the remand order was pronounced. Saiful Islam, the chairman’s younger son, reportedly turned on members of the press who had assembled to cover the high-profile surrender. Witnesses stated that Saiful confronted photojournalists and video crews, shoving equipment and knocking mobile phones and cameras out of reporters’ hands as his father was led away under police escort. The localized aggression prompted immediate condemnation from regional media unions, who have called for swift legal accountability regarding the harassment of journalists performing their duties on court premises.
