Police Retrieve Handcuffs After Mob Seizes Suspect

Paba, Rajshahi – Police in Paba Upazila successfully recovered handcuffs from a detained suspect following a dramatic incident in which he was briefly seized by a mob. Local intermediaries reportedly helped return the restraints, though authorities have declined to officially confirm the method, adding to speculation surrounding the unusual recovery.

The incident occurred during a robbery investigation involving a young man named Rasel. On Sunday, 22 March, a team of eight officers from Paba Police Station arrested him at Pillapara Mor near Sahida Haque Filling Station. Witnesses said that Rasel’s mother, several relatives, and local residents gathered at the scene and forcibly took him from police custody, creating a tense standoff.

Residents reported that the mob removed Rasel while he was still wearing handcuffs. Police later sought to retrieve the restraints and, according to locals, enlisted the help of intermediaries. Approximately two hours later, the handcuffs were recovered intact. Locals claimed that a few individuals were given a key and used it to unlock the cuffs from Rasel before returning them to the authorities.

Rasel’s arrest was connected to an earlier case. On 15 March, Afshar Ali filed a complaint accusing him of assault, and Rasel had subsequently been taken into custody in relation to that investigation.

When asked about the handcuff recovery, Paba Police Officer-in-Charge Jahangir Alam said he could not comment at the time, citing ongoing patrol duties. Rajshahi Metropolitan Police spokesperson Additional Deputy Commissioner Gaziur Rahman confirmed that the handcuffs had been retrieved but said that claims of using a key to recover them were unverified. He also stated that the police had filed a case regarding the robbery and that three individuals had been arrested and sent to jail, though it remained unclear whether Rasel was among them.

The incident has drawn attention to the challenges law enforcement faces when mobs intervene during arrests. Observers noted that, while the handcuffs were eventually returned, the episode highlighted the difficulties officers face in controlling high-tension situations and the potential risks posed to both police personnel and suspects.
