Police in Khulna have arrested two young men in possession of a foreign-made pistol during a routine patrol operation in the city’s Boyra area. The arrests were made on Tuesday afternoon (7 April) from the Hajee Foyez Uddin Cross Road near Aziz’s Mor.
According to law enforcement officials, the incident unfolded when a patrol team from Sonadanga Model Police Station noticed three young men standing and conversing in front of a residential property belonging to a local resident. Upon spotting the police presence, one of the individuals reportedly fled the scene on foot, raising suspicion among the officers.
The remaining two individuals, who were travelling on a motorcycle, were subsequently stopped and searched. During the search, police recovered a foreign-made pistol along with a magazine concealed on one of the suspects.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Mamun Molla (30), son of Hafiz Molla, a resident of Hajee Foyez Uddin Cross Road area, and Lovlu Ahmed, son of Badarul Alam, from the Rayermohol Boro Mosque area of Khulna.
Police further stated that Mamun Molla had previously introduced himself as a journalist affiliated with a platform called “SAS TV 24”, a claim which is now being examined as part of the ongoing investigation. Authorities are also verifying whether this claimed identity was used to facilitate movement or influence in different locations.
Sub-Inspector Nadeem Mahmud of Sonadanga Model Police Station said that the patrol team acted on routine vigilance when the suspicious behaviour of the group drew attention. He confirmed that after the attempted escape by one individual, officers conducted a thorough search of the two remaining suspects, leading to the recovery of the firearm.
Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Rofiqul Islam of Sonadanga Model Police Station stated that both suspects are currently under intensive interrogation. He added that legal proceedings under the Arms Act are being prepared and further investigations are underway to determine the origin of the weapon and whether others are involved in the incident.
