Three More Children Die in Rajshahi with Measles Symptoms

Rajshahi Medical College Hospital (RAMEC) has reported the deaths of three additional children exhibiting symptoms consistent with measles over the past 24 hours. This tragic development brings the total number of measles-related fatalities at the hospital to 46.

A hospital spokesperson, Dr Shankar K. Biswas, stated that 23 more children were admitted to RAMEC during the same period. At present, 133 children remain under treatment for measles symptoms, while 10 children have been discharged after recovering in the last 24 hours.

Dr Biswas provided further context, revealing that a total of 452 children have been admitted to the hospital with measles-like symptoms since the outbreak began. Of these, 46 have died. In addition, a recent report confirmed the death of a child who tested positive for measles.

“Protecting children from measles requires strengthening their immune systems,” Dr Biswas emphasised. “Breastfeeding newborns, introducing nutritious foods after six months, and adhering strictly to vaccination schedules are critical measures.”

Medical professionals are urging parents and guardians to remain vigilant. They advise that any signs of fever, rashes, or breathing difficulties should prompt immediate medical attention.

Health authorities continue to monitor the situation closely. With measles being highly contagious, rapid identification and treatment are essential to prevent further fatalities. Public health campaigns emphasising vaccination and early symptom recognition are ongoing in Rajshahi and surrounding districts.

Dr Biswas also stressed the importance of community awareness: “Parents must not delay medical consultation when symptoms appear. Early treatment can save lives.”

As the outbreak continues, hospital staff are working tirelessly to manage the rising number of cases while providing supportive care to affected children. The ongoing situation underscores the urgent need for strengthened public health measures and community participation in vaccination drives.
