BNP Sacks Union Official After Viral Drug Abuse Video Causes Uproar

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has taken decisive disciplinary action by stripping Miron Hossain (Jamaddar), a ward-level official in Lakshmipur, of all party responsibilities after video footage purportedly showing him using illicit substances circulated widely online.

The expulsion order came within 24 hours of the clip gaining traction on social media, provoking intense outrage across regional political and community groups.

Uncompromising Organizational Measures

Miron Hossain served as the General Secretary for Ward No. 2 BNP under the Noagaon Union in Ramganj Upazila. In a press statement issued on Monday, 3 August, the Ramganj Upazila branch of the party confirmed the immediate revocation of his primary membership and all associated administrative functions.

The official communique, signed by Ramganj Upazila BNP General Secretary Monowar Hossain, affirmed that the expulsion was enforced because Hossain’s conduct directly violated the party charter and subverted internal discipline. Official copies of the decision were forwarded to the Lakshmipur District BNP executive body and relevant local committees to formalise the sanction.

Party leaders underscored that strict standards of conduct are enforced at every level, asserting that actions damaging the party’s public standing or contravening statutory regulations will not be tolerated.

Footage Prompts Public Indignation

The fallout began on Sunday evening when a 35-second recording was uploaded to Facebook and spread rapidly. The sequence allegedly shows Hossain preparing cannabis for smoking before ingesting yaba—a highly addictive compound of methamphetamine and caffeine strictly prohibited under national narcotics laws.

The swift diffusion of the video sparked severe public disapproval throughout Lakshmipur, leading civic groups and opposing political cadres to insist on swift retribution. The controversy has reignited regional discussions regarding substance misuse and the ethical standards required of local representatives.

Allegations of Coercion and Political Plotting

In an attempt to counter the public backlash, Hossain released a clarification video on Monday, denying habitual drug use and arguing that the clip was taken out of context.

Hossain asserted that the recording dates back to 2022 and was produced under intimidation. He claimed that operatives connected to the Awami League forced him into performing the illicit acts while filming the scene. According to his account, political rivals retained the footage and intentionally leaked it now as part of a orchestrated plot to undermine his position within the party.

Despite these defense claims, the upazila executive body proceeded with his summary removal to uphold the organization’s public reputation.

Regional Context and Discipline

Promptly addressing misconduct among field-level cadres remains an important priority for political parties in Bangladesh seeking to retain public trust.

Furthermore, the proliferation of yaba and methamphetamine derivatives across southern and south-eastern regions—largely due to proximity to coastal transit corridors near Cox’s Bazar and Chittagong—remains a major law enforcement challenge. Consequently, public representatives implicated in drug-related offences routinely face rapid public censure and stringent party sanctions.
