IPL Switch Leads to PSL Ban

The 19th edition of the Indian Premier League is currently under way, with franchise teams competing in one of cricket’s most prominent Twenty20 competitions. During the player auction, Bangladesh fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman was signed by Kolkata Knight Riders for a reported sum of 9.20 crore rupees. However, subsequent developments led to his withdrawal from the tournament.

According to the sequence of events, Mustafizur Rahman was excluded from the IPL amid security concerns linked to threats from extremist groups in India. The issue extended beyond the tournament, as Bangladesh reportedly refrained from travelling to India for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup due to safety considerations. Furthermore, the Bangladesh government suspended the domestic broadcast of the ongoing IPL season in connection with the same matter.

In Mustafizur’s absence, Zimbabwe fast bowler Blessing Muzarabani was brought into the IPL as a replacement. The 29-year-old had previously signed a contract with Islamabad United in the Pakistan Super League. However, upon receiving an offer from Kolkata Knight Riders, Muzarabani withdrew from his PSL agreement in order to participate in the IPL.

This decision prompted disciplinary action from the Pakistan Super League authorities. In an official statement, the league emphasised the importance of professionalism, transparency, and contractual integrity in franchise cricket. It stated: “Maintaining transparency and consistency is essential for participants in franchise-based leagues. Engaging in another league while a prior binding contract remains in force is contrary to expected standards. If such behaviour is overlooked, it undermines contractual reliability and the trust of franchises, governing bodies, and all stakeholders. Considering the seriousness of this breach, a two-year ban has been imposed.”

As a result, Muzarabani has been suspended from the PSL for a period of two years. Despite this setback, he has already featured in two matches in the ongoing IPL season. In his second appearance, against Sunrisers Hyderabad, he delivered a notable performance, claiming four wickets for 41 runs.

A summary of his recent IPL performances is provided below:

This is not the first instance of disciplinary action taken by the PSL for contractual violations. Previously, South African cricketer Corbin Bosch received a one-year ban under similar circumstances.

In the current season, two additional players—Australia’s Spencer Johnson and Sri Lanka’s Dasun Shanaka—have also withdrawn from PSL contracts to participate in the IPL. Although no formal decisions have yet been announced regarding their cases, the possibility of comparable disciplinary measures remains under consideration.

These developments highlight the increasing importance of contractual compliance and governance across overlapping franchise leagues in international cricket.
