The incident took place on a Friday afternoon near the Jamalpur Gudaraghat Jetty area under Kaliganj upazila. The victim, Abdul Majid Mondol, was a resident of the Jamalpur Madhyapara area and the son of the late Altu Mondol. The prime suspect behind this violent attack has been identified as Mozammel Hossain, locally known as Muja Sarkar, a resident of North Jamalpur Sarkarpara. According to local accounts, Mozammel has active political affiliations with the Jatiyatabadi Jubo Dal and is widely known in the neighbourhood for his alleged involvement in local drug trafficking and substance abuse.

Family members and local residents revealed that Mozammel had a history of domestic turbulence with his wife, Shahnaz Begum. Their marriage had been plagued by persistent friction, largely driven by Mozammel’s severe substance addiction. Following regular bouts of abuse and physical assaults fueled by narcotics, Shahnaz had sought refuge at her paternal home on multiple occasions. She had been staying with her parents for quite some time prior to the incident. Tensions escalated sharply when Mozammel began turning up at his father-in-law’s residence to harass and intimidate his estranged wife. Abdul Majid Mondol strongly condemned these repeated acts of violence and intimidation directed at his daughter, which ultimately ignited a bitter feud between the father-in-law and the volatile son-in-law.

On the fateful Friday afternoon, Abdul Majid was managing his routine business at his banana stall situated in the busy Jamalpur bazaar. Security lapses and public thoroughfares failed to deter the assailant, who arrived carrying a concealed axe hidden inside a trolley bag. Before the elderly trader could comprehend the gravity of the situation or mount any defense, Mozammel whipped the weapon out of the bag and launched a vicious, indiscriminate assault.

The helpless vendor collapsed instantly onto the ground amidst a pool of blood as panic swept through the surrounding marketplace. Terrified onlookers and fellow traders rushed forward to rescue the injured man, hurriedly transporting him to the Kaliganj Upazila Health Complex. However, the attending medical officers at the emergency department pronounced him dead upon arrival, noting the severity of the hack wounds.

Law enforcement agencies quickly initiated a thorough investigation following the incident, launching manhunts to apprehend the fugitive suspect who went into hiding immediately after the attack. Community leaders and grieving relatives have demanded exemplary punishment for the perpetrator, whose drug-fueled rage shattered a family and left an entire neighbourhood reeling from shock.
