A serious road accident occurred in the early hours of Monday near the Bhanu Gachh Chowmuhani area along the Shreemangal road in Kamalganj upazila of Moulvibazar, when a poultry-laden lorry lost control and crashed into the rear of a stationary bus, resulting in substantial livestock loss and injuries to transport workers.
According to local sources and police reports, the lorry had set off late on Sunday night from a poultry farm in Meghnaghat under Bhairab upazila of Kishoreganj district. It was carrying approximately 950 layer chickens, destined for a market in Bianibazar, Sylhet. After travelling through the night, the vehicle reached the Bhanu Gachh market area around 6:00 am on Monday when the driver reportedly lost control for reasons yet to be determined.
The lorry subsequently struck the rear of a stationary Bangladesh Road Transport Corporation (BRTC) bus parked by the roadside. The impact was severe, causing widespread damage within the cargo compartment. Out of the total poultry load, at least 350 chickens died instantly at the scene, while many others were injured and left in weakened condition, raising fears of further losses.
Two poultry transport workers, identified as Mobarak Hossain (37) and Sani Ahmed (26), both residents of the Chandibeth South Para area of Bhairab upazila, sustained injuries in the collision. Local residents quickly rescued them and provided first aid before further medical attention was arranged. Their condition has since been reported as stable.
The financial loss from the incident has been preliminarily estimated at around 250,000 Bangladeshi taka, though stakeholders believe the figure may rise due to additional poultry deaths and potential market losses. Compounding the situation, allegations have emerged that some chickens were looted from the overturned vehicle by bystanders in the aftermath of the crash.
The accident also caused temporary disruption to traffic movement along the busy Shreemangal road, creating congestion and public inconvenience in the surrounding area.

Following the incident, Assistant Sub-Inspector Al-Amin Mia of Kamalganj Police Station visited the site along with a police team. He confirmed that an investigation is underway to determine the exact cause of the crash. Authorities are also examining issues related to road safety compliance, vehicle condition, and potential negligence.
Local residents have highlighted that the Bhanu Gachh market area frequently suffers from traffic congestion and unregulated roadside parking, which they believe significantly increases the risk of such accidents. They have urged the authorities to strengthen traffic management, enforce parking regulations, and improve monitoring to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
