Bangladesh Bank Issues Vigilance Advisory Over High-Value Banknotes

Bangladesh Bank, the central bank of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh, has released a formal notification advising the public to exercise extreme caution when conducting transactions with high-value banknotes during the upcoming Eid-ul-Adha festival. The monetary authority specifically noted that the seasonal surge in livestock trading creates a vulnerable environment where counterfeiters often attempt to circulate forged currency into the financial system.

During the sacrificial animal markets, commonly referred to as Qurbani Haats, the volume of cash transactions increases exponentially. This liquidity often involves the heavy use of 500-taka and 1,000-taka denominations. Given the rapid pace and outdoor nature of these transactions, the central bank has emphasised that both buyers and livestock traders must remain vigilant to protect themselves from significant financial fraud.

Identification of Genuine Security Features

To safeguard the interests of the public, Bangladesh Bank has provided specific guidelines on the physical and technical security markers present in legitimate tender. The bank advises citizens to perform a rigorous inspection of 100, 200, 500, and 1,000-taka notes, focusing on the following verified features:

  • Watermark Analysis: Every genuine banknote features a high-definition watermark of the Father of the Nation, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, accompanied by the bank’s official logo and the denomination. These should be clearly visible when the note is held toward a light source.

  • Security Thread Technology: High-denomination notes are embedded with a sophisticated security thread. In genuine currency, this thread appears as a broken line on the surface but shows as a continuous, solid line when viewed against the light. Depending on the denomination, this thread may also exhibit holographic properties or micro-text.

  • Optically Variable Ink (OVI): A critical deterrent against simple colour photocopying is the use of OVI in the printed denomination. When the note is tilted, the colour of the ink should transition—typically from gold to green or similar shifts—signifying its authenticity.

  • Tactile Intaglio Printing: Genuine banknotes are printed using a distinctive “intaglio” or raised-surface technique. This produces a rough texture that can be felt by running a finger over the main portrait, the large denomination numerals, and the specific tactile markings designed for the visually impaired.

Institutional Infrastructure at Livestock Markets

Recognising the logistical challenges of currency verification in busy markets, Bangladesh Bank has coordinated with scheduled commercial banks to establish a physical presence at major trading sites. Temporary banking booths will be stationed at prominent Qurbani Haats nationwide to provide immediate verification services and facilitate secure financial dealings.

Should any transaction spark suspicion, the central bank recommends that the parties involved consult the officials at these on-site booths. Furthermore, any branch of a commercial bank remains available for currency verification, utilising ultraviolet (UV) scanning equipment to detect the presence of fluorescent fibres and other forensic markers that counterfeiters fail to replicate. The bank has also urged the public to avoid transactions with unknown or suspicious entities and to utilise mobile financial services (MFS) or bank transfers for large sums whenever feasible.

Historical Context and National Economic Integrity

The period surrounding Eid-ul-Adha traditionally represents the peak of physical currency movement in Bangladesh. The decentralised nature of the livestock economy, involving thousands of farmers and traders from rural hinterlands, necessitates a high level of institutional protection. By issuing this pre-emptive warning, Bangladesh Bank aims to uphold the integrity of the Taka and ensure that the religious and social celebrations are not marred by criminal exploitation.

Detailed visual guides and comprehensive lists of security features for all current banknote series have been made available on the official Bangladesh Bank website. The central bank has instructed all financial institutions to provide maximum cooperation to the public, ensuring that the festive economy operates with transparency and security. Public awareness, according to the bank, is the most robust line of defence against the economic disruption caused by counterfeit currency rings.
