A man accused of theft has been beaten to death by a mob in Shibganj Upazila of Bogura District, in an incident that has triggered concern over vigilante violence in the area.
The deceased, identified as 35-year-old Selim Fakir of Pilkhunj village under Kalai Union in Kahaloo Upazila, was allegedly attacked in the early hours of Friday in the Chatua Matalpara village of Majhihatta Union, within Shibganj Upazila.
According to local accounts, the incident began late Thursday night when a group of burglars reportedly broke into the home of a resident named Gopal Chandra. The intruders are said to have taken approximately 350,000 Bangladeshi taka along with around eight and a half bhori of gold ornaments. During the raid, the family claims they were held at knifepoint and threatened before the thieves attempted to flee.
As alarm was raised, neighbouring residents rushed to the scene and managed to detain one of the alleged intruders, identified as Selim Fakir. However, tensions escalated rapidly, and an angry crowd allegedly assaulted him severely. He later succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
Gopal Chandra’s daughter-in-law, Purnima Saha, stated that the burglars entered the house by breaking through a wall and forcibly restrained the occupants before looting valuables. She further claimed that even personal ornaments worn by family members were taken during the raid.
However, conflicting accounts have emerged. While the victim’s family maintains that Selim Fakir was targeted on suspicion alone, local residents believe he was directly involved in the burglary attempt.
Police from Bogura District confirmed that Selim Fakir had multiple prior allegations against him. The Officer-in-Charge of Shibganj Police Station stated that at least nine cases of theft, robbery, and mugging had previously been filed against him in different police stations.
Authorities have recovered the body and sent it to Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital morgue for post-mortem examination. Investigations are ongoing to determine the full circumstances of both the burglary and the subsequent killing.
