Sangakkara Confident Suryavanshi Is Ready For International Cricket

Following the conclusion of the Rajasthan Royals’ Indian Premier League (IPL) campaign, head coach Kumar Sangakkara has expressed strong conviction that opening batsman Vaibhav Suryavanshi will soon receive a call-up to the Indian national cricket team. Although the franchise fell short of reaching the final, the 15-year-old left-hander emerged as a focal point of the tournament due to his highly aggressive and impactful performances at the crease.

Suryavanshi concluded his tournament with an accumulation of 776 runs across 16 innings, operating at a strike rate of 237.30. His scoring was heavily dominated by boundary strokes, which accounted for 684 of his total runs. This boundary tally was comprised of 63 fours and a tournament-record 72 sixes.

Over the course of the season, Suryavanshi recorded one century and five half-centuries. Despite these high scores, his final stretch of games was marked by consecutive narrow misses; the batsman was dismissed in the nineties in three of his last four innings, narrowly missing out on converting those performances into additional centuries.

During the playoff stage, Suryavanshi delivered a rapid 97 runs from 29 deliveries in the Eliminator fixture. He followed this performance with a 47-ball 96 in the subsequent match against the Gujarat Titans. In that innings, he completed his half-century in 31 balls—his most cautious fifty of the season—before accelerating to add another 46 runs off the next 15 deliveries. His stay at the crease ended when he offered a direct catch to Prasidh Krishna at deep third man, falling just short of a hundred.

This batting display proved insufficient to secure a victory, as the Gujarat Titans successfully chased down the target, guided by the partnerships of Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharsan. The result brought an end to Rajasthan’s bid to return to the final for the first time since 2022.

Despite the team’s elimination, Kumar Sangakkara highly commended the tactical maturity displayed by the teenager when facing high-calibre international bowling units. Addressing the media regarding Suryavanshi’s prospects for international selection, Sangakkara noted:

“I believe that given what Vaibhav has achieved against some of the finest bowlers in the world, he is ready to take on whatever challenge is presented to him. I am certain he will receive a national call-up in the near future. He bats with immense maturity and has executed his responsibilities in our opening partnership exceptionally well throughout the season.”

Sangakkara further clarified that the coaching staff has maintained a specific development strategy for the young player, focusing on keeping his mind clear of unnecessary complications. The coach stated that Suryavanshi diligently prepares for matches by studying video footage of opposition bowlers and participating actively in team tactical sessions. The franchise intends to continue fostering this uninhibited, fearless approach to batting without adding undue pressure to his game.
