Police in Biswanath Upazila, under Sylhet district, have arrested a notorious local drug dealer following an overnight operation in the region. The suspect, identified as 39-year-old Islam Uddin—locally known by his alias “Picchi Islam”—was apprehended with a contraband consignment of methamphetamine-based Yaba tablets in his possession.

Law enforcement officers initiated the raid late on Tuesday night after receiving precise intelligence regarding illicit trafficking activity near Puran Habra Bazaar. Acting on the tip-off, a special police team intercepted the suspect at around midnight. A body search conducted on the spot led to the discovery and seizure of 20 pieces of Yaba tablets hidden on his person, which officers confirmed were intended for immediate distribution to local buyers.

The suspect is the son of Abdul Hannan and hails from Chhatrish village, located within the Doulatpur Union of Biswanath Upazila. According to local police records, Islam Uddin is a listed offender with a long-standing history of drug dealing across various neighbourhoods in Sylhet. Investigators revealed that he had been evading sustained surveillance while managing an illegal narcotics distribution network in the area.

A formal criminal case has been registered against the accused by the police under the Narcotics Control Act. Following the completion of preliminary interrogation and necessary legal documentation at the station, officers transferred him to the judicial court in Sylhet on Wednesday afternoon for formal remand proceedings.

Officer-in-Charge of Biswanath Police Station, Gazi Md Mahbubur Rahman, confirmed the arrest and subsequent legal measures taken by his department. “The detainee is a habitual drug trader operating within this jurisdiction. Upon searching him, our officers recovered a haul of illegal Yaba tablets,” the police chief stated. “Following standard protocol and due legal process, we have presented him before the learned court.”

Local authorities have reaffirmed their commitment to curbing the proliferation of synthetic drugs across Sylhet district. Law enforcement agencies in the area continue to step up night patrols, set up strategic checkpoints, and gather intelligence to dismantle regional drug syndicates, targeting both street-level pushers and larger supply rings operating along regional transit routes.
