Veteran politician Tofail Ahmed passes away, first funeral in Dhanmondi

Tofail Ahmed, a veteran leader of the Bangladesh Awami League, a former government minister, and one of the principal organisers of the 1969 mass uprising and the 1971 Liberation War, has passed away. He breathed his last at 4:30 pm on Monday, 1 June, whilst undergoing treatment at Square Hospital in Dhaka. He was 82 years old.

The senior politician had been suffering from prolonged paralysis and various other physical complications. He was admitted to Square Hospital in a critical condition on 28 September and had been on life support there until his demise.

Funeral Arrangements in Dhaka

Following his passing, the body of the veteran leader was transported to the Takwa Mosque in Dhanmondi, Road 12/A, for the ritual bathing (ghusl). His first funeral prayer (Janaza) is scheduled to be held at the same mosque today, Monday, after the Maghrib prayer.

This information was officially confirmed to told our representative by N. M. Nasir Uddin, Deputy Commissioner (DC) of the Media and Public Relations Division of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), as well as by his political colleagues.

Hemayet Uddin, a member of the Awami League Central Sub-Committee and an Executive Member of the Bhola District Awami League, told our representative , “The first Janaza will proceed after the ritual washing. If everything goes according to plan, the burial will be completed tomorrow, Tuesday, following a second Janaza in his home district of Bhola.” According to family sources, following the completion of the initial funeral prayers in the capital, the body will be kept overnight in the mortuary of Square Hospital.

Final Rites and Burial in Bhola

If arrangements proceed according to schedule, the mortal remains of the veteran politician will be transported to his home district of Bhola via helicopter on Tuesday morning.

The second Janaza will take place at the Bhola Zilla School ground after the Zohr prayer on Tuesday. Following the prayers, he will be laid to rest in his village home alongside the graves of his parents.
