A violent domestic incident in Dashmina upazila of Patuakhali has sparked widespread concern after a housewife was allegedly tied up and physically assaulted, prompting local residents to intervene and later hand over two suspects to police.
The incident took place on Wednesday in Charhosnabad village under Bashbaria Union. The victim, Lipi Akter (27), alleged that she had long been subjected to domestic abuse linked to ongoing family disputes. She lives with her husband and five children—two sons and three daughters.
According to the victim’s statement, her husband, Shah Jamal (35), began intensifying abuse after contracting a second marriage. She further alleged that her father-in-law, Moslem Mridha (70), was frequently involved in the harassment and physical violence.
Eyewitnesses reported that on the day of the incident, the woman was bound at the hands and feet and forcibly placed into a small passenger vehicle, where she was beaten. Her cries for help reportedly drew the attention of nearby residents, who rushed to the scene. The situation quickly escalated into a confrontation between the locals and the accused individuals.
Locals eventually detained the husband and father-in-law before informing the police. Officers later arrived at the scene, rescued the victim, and took the accused into custody following the filing of a case by the victim.
During the intervention, a local resident, Helal Mridha (65), sustained injuries after allegedly being struck on the head with a stick by the father-in-law while attempting to assist the victim. He was subsequently admitted to the Upazila Health Complex for treatment.
A video of the incident, recorded by bystanders, later circulated on social media, showing the victim restrained and being assaulted while crying for help. The footage triggered further public outrage in the area.
The victim, while receiving medical treatment, stated that the abuse had been ongoing for a long period and worsened significantly after her husband’s second marriage. She also said that multiple local arbitration meetings had previously been held, but no lasting resolution was achieved.
Police confirmed that preliminary investigations indicate a history of domestic violence within the household, with the latest incident involving severe assault and an alleged attempt to remove the victim forcibly while she was incapacitated. The investigation remains ongoing.
