Tata AIA Life Insurance has introduced two new cancer insurance products designed to provide policyholders with financial protection against both the high cost of treatment and the potential loss of income following a cancer diagnosis, responding to growing demand for more flexible critical illness coverage in India.
The insurer unveiled Sampoorna Care – Cancer and Sampoorna Care – Cancer Fund, products that combine traditional health-related financial support with options for regular income payments, reflecting changing consumer preferences over how critical illness benefits are received.
The launch comes at a time when cancer continues to pose a significant public health challenge across India. According to data from the World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), more than 1.57 million people are diagnosed with cancer in the country each year. The growing incidence of the disease has heightened awareness of the financial strain that prolonged treatment can place on individuals and families, particularly where illness disrupts employment and regular household income.
Tata AIA said the new products were developed following consumer research that highlighted a shift in customer expectations. Rather than receiving a one-off lump-sum payment after a critical illness diagnosis, many policyholders now prefer financial support that mirrors a regular salary and helps them meet ongoing living expenses throughout treatment and recovery.
The company’s research found that 48% of respondents favoured receiving critical illness benefits as a steady income stream instead of a single payout. Among those, 47% preferred monthly instalments, while 4% opted for annual payments. The findings suggest that many consumers view predictable cash flow as a more practical form of financial assistance during long-term medical treatment.
The survey also indicated that sustained financial support is a priority for most prospective policyholders. Around 76% of respondents said they wanted benefits to continue over several years. Of these, 42% preferred income support lasting two years, while 34% favoured a five-year payment period.
These preferences have shaped the structure of Tata AIA’s flagship Sampoorna Care – Cancer plan. The policy provides coverage of up to INR50 lakh and allows customers to tailor how they receive their benefits. Policyholders may choose a full lump-sum payment, a regular monthly income, or a hybrid arrangement combining an immediate upfront payment with monthly income extending for up to five years.
Such flexibility is intended to help families manage both immediate medical expenses and longer-term financial commitments, including household bills, education costs, loan repayments and other recurring obligations that may continue even when a patient’s earning capacity is reduced.
The insurer has also incorporated several additional features aimed at improving early intervention and access to treatment.
One of the plan’s notable inclusions is a diagnostic benefit that helps cover the costs associated with early-stage medical screening. Early detection is widely recognised as a crucial factor in improving treatment outcomes for many forms of cancer, yet diagnostic procedures can create an additional financial burden before treatment even begins.
Another feature is an overseas treatment booster, which provides an additional benefit equal to 10% of the sum assured for policyholders seeking eligible treatment abroad. This provision is designed to offer greater financial flexibility for individuals who may require specialised care unavailable domestically or who choose international treatment options.
The plan also includes a 30-year premium rate guarantee, providing customers with greater certainty over long-term policy costs. Fixed premium rates can be particularly valuable for policyholders purchasing cover at a younger age, allowing them to maintain protection without facing unexpected increases in premiums over time.
The introduction of these products reflects broader trends within India’s insurance sector, where companies are increasingly designing specialised health protection plans that extend beyond reimbursing medical expenses. Insurers are placing greater emphasis on income replacement, long-term financial stability and flexible benefit structures as consumers seek more comprehensive protection against the economic impact of serious illnesses.
Medical advances have improved survival rates for many cancers, but treatment often involves prolonged therapy, repeated hospital visits and extended recovery periods that can significantly affect employment and household finances. As a result, insurers are adapting their products to address not only healthcare costs but also the wider financial consequences of life-threatening illnesses.
By combining cancer-specific protection with flexible payment options and additional diagnostic and treatment benefits, Tata AIA aims to offer policyholders a more comprehensive financial safety net. The launch of Sampoorna Care – Cancer and Sampoorna Care – Cancer Fund highlights the growing focus on personalised insurance solutions that help individuals and families navigate both the medical and financial challenges associated with a cancer diagnosis.
