US Grants Temporary Iran Oil Export Relief

The United States has authorised a temporary easing of restrictions on Iran’s oil production, supply and sales amid ongoing negotiations aimed at securing a broader peace agreement. The move follows preliminary understandings reached last week between Washington and Tehran, with formal approval issued by the US Treasury Department on Monday, 22 June.

Under the arrangement, Iran will be permitted to produce, transport and sell crude oil, petrochemicals and other petroleum products until 21 August. The decision marks a notable, albeit limited, shift in the long-standing sanctions regime that has significantly constrained Iran’s energy sector for years.

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, writing on the social media platform X, linked the measure to what he described as productive talks currently taking place in Switzerland. According to him, Iran has committed to maintaining uninterrupted maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global shipping route, while also allowing inspectors from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) access to the country.

As part of this framework, the US Treasury has issued a 60-day general licence. This effectively permits Iran to resume limited energy exports, providing a temporary legal pathway for international trade in its petroleum sector.

The easing of restrictions extends beyond crude oil. It also covers petrochemical products and related derivatives, alongside a partial relaxation of sanctions affecting banking, insurance and transport services linked to the trade. These sectors are essential for facilitating any meaningful recovery in export activity.

Despite the temporary relief, Washington has maintained a clear line on enforcement. Transactions involving North Korea and Cuba remain strictly prohibited under the same sanctions framework. Existing restrictions on those two countries continue in full force, with no exceptions granted under the new licence.

The move is being closely watched by global energy markets, where even short-term shifts in Iranian supply policy can influence pricing and stability. While the measure is time-limited, its broader significance will depend on the progress of ongoing diplomatic negotiations between the two countries in the coming weeks.
