Taskin Returns as Bangladesh Replace Injured Mustafizur

Bangladesh have reshuffled their squad ahead of the third and final One-Day International against Zimbabwe, with left-arm fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman ruled out through injury. Pace-bowling all-rounder Mohammad Saifuddin has been recalled to the ODI squad as his replacement, while experienced seamer Taskin Ahmed has reversed his earlier decision to skip the Twenty20 International series and will now rejoin the national side.

The latest changes come at a difficult time for Bangladesh, who have already lost the three-match ODI series after suffering defeats in the opening two fixtures. The final match in Harare on 11 July now represents an opportunity for the visitors to restore some pride before attention shifts to the T20I leg of the tour.

Mustafizur’s absence is a significant setback for Bangladesh’s pace attack. The left-arm seamer sustained a hamstring injury that had already forced him to miss the second ODI. Following further medical assessment, team doctors have advised that he should take no further part in either the final ODI or the subsequent three-match T20I series.

The Bangladesh Cricket Board confirmed that Mustafizur will return home to begin a rehabilitation programme under the supervision of the medical team. The priority will be ensuring his full recovery before he resumes competitive cricket, rather than rushing him back into international action.

His withdrawal has opened the door for Mohammad Saifuddin, who returns to Bangladesh’s ODI squad for the first time in almost five years. The pace-bowling all-rounder last represented the national side in a One-Day International in July 2021 before a series of injury and fitness setbacks interrupted his international career.

Although Saifuddin has remained on the selectors’ radar, particularly in Bangladesh’s T20 plans, this latest recall offers him another opportunity to revive his 50-over career. Whether he will feature in the playing XI for the series finale remains uncertain, with the coaching staff expected to make their decision based on pitch conditions, match strategy and overall team balance.

Bangladesh have also received a timely boost through the return of Taskin Ahmed. The experienced fast bowler had initially been granted leave from the Zimbabwe T20I series to fulfil commitments in the Lanka Premier League. However, following Mustafizur’s injury and the resulting reduction in Bangladesh’s experienced pace resources, Taskin agreed to prioritise national duty after discussions with the selectors.

His decision is expected to strengthen Bangladesh’s bowling attack considerably during the T20I series. As one of the country’s leading fast bowlers in recent years, Taskin’s pace, experience and leadership will be valuable assets as Bangladesh attempt to recover from a disappointing ODI campaign.

The selectors have opted against making any further alterations to the T20I squad despite the continued absence of injured captain Litton Das. No replacement has been named, suggesting confidence in the existing group rather than introducing another late change before the shortest-format series begins.

Bangladesh’s immediate focus, however, remains firmly on the final ODI. Having already surrendered the series, the team will be eager to avoid a clean sweep by producing an improved performance in Harare. A victory would not alter the series result, but it would provide a welcome confidence boost ahead of the T20Is and help restore momentum after successive defeats.

Following the conclusion of the ODI series, Bangladesh and Zimbabwe will contest a three-match T20I series in Bulawayo on 15, 17 and 19 July. The return of Taskin Ahmed and the recall of Mohammad Saifuddin could provide fresh impetus to Bangladesh’s fast-bowling unit as the visitors seek to finish the tour on a far stronger note than they managed in the 50-over format.
