Bangladesh’s difficult tour of Zimbabwe has taken another disappointing turn, with left-arm fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman ruled out of the remainder of the series after sustaining a hamstring injury. The setback comes shortly after Bangladesh surrendered the One-Day International (ODI) series, adding further pressure on a side already struggling with injuries and inconsistent performances.
The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has confirmed that Mustafizur will miss not only the third and final ODI but also the entire three-match Twenty20 International (T20I) series. To fill the void, all-rounder Mohammad Saifuddin has been drafted into the squad for the final ODI, while experienced pace bowler Taskin Ahmed has been recalled for the T20I series.
According to the BCB, Mustafizur experienced discomfort in his hamstring during a training session ahead of the second ODI, which forced him to sit out that match. Subsequent medical assessments revealed that allowing him to continue playing would carry a significant risk of aggravating the injury. As a precaution, the team’s medical staff recommended withdrawing him from the remainder of the tour. He will now return to Bangladesh to begin rehabilitation under the supervision of the board’s doctors and physiotherapists.
Mustafizur has been one of Bangladesh’s most dependable bowlers across formats for several years. His ability to generate movement with the new ball, execute deceptive slower deliveries and deliver effectively during the closing overs has made him a vital figure in the national side. His absence leaves Bangladesh without one of its most experienced pace options at a crucial stage of the tour.
His injury has also prompted an unexpected change to Taskin Ahmed’s plans. The right-arm pacer had originally opted out of the T20I series against Zimbabwe in order to prepare for participation in the Lanka Premier League (LPL). However, with Mustafizur unavailable and the national side requiring experienced fast-bowling support, Taskin has cancelled his leave and will now join Bangladesh’s T20I squad. His return provides the visitors with additional pace, experience and leadership within the bowling unit.
Mohammad Saifuddin’s inclusion for the final ODI also gives Bangladesh greater flexibility. Known for his ability to swing the new ball and contribute valuable runs in the lower order, the pace-bowling all-rounder offers balance to both departments. If selected in the playing XI, he could play a key role in strengthening Bangladesh’s options with both bat and ball.
Injuries have repeatedly disrupted Bangladesh’s campaign throughout this tour. Earlier, ODI captain Litton Das was ruled out of the series because of injury, prompting the selectors to call up opening batter Parvez Hossain Emon as his replacement. The succession of enforced changes has made it difficult for the team management to maintain consistency in selection and establish settled combinations.
Results have also compounded Bangladesh’s frustrations. Defeats in the opening two ODIs handed Zimbabwe an unassailable lead, meaning the visitors have already lost the three-match series before the final fixture. The third ODI in Harare now represents an opportunity to avoid a series whitewash and restore some confidence before attention shifts to the shorter format.
Following the conclusion of the ODI series, Bangladesh and Zimbabwe will contest a three-match T20I series. The opening match is scheduled for 15 July, with the remaining fixtures to be played on 17 and 19 July. All three matches will take place in Bulawayo.
With several key players unavailable and the squad undergoing significant changes, Bangladesh will hope the fresh additions can help revive their fortunes. The T20I series offers the Tigers a chance to reset, build momentum and produce a stronger performance after a disappointing ODI campaign.
