In a targeted enforcement operation in Nalitabari Upazila, police have arrested three individuals after recovering a large consignment of smuggled Indian liquor from a pickup truck. Acting on confidential intelligence, officers intercepted the vehicle and seized 273 bottles of assorted brands, believed to have been illegally transported across the border for distribution in local markets.
According to officers from Bangladesh Police, the operation took place on Monday morning in the Nayanikanda Goruhati area, where routine checkpoints and search procedures were underway. A yellow pickup truck drew suspicion after it was observed moving irregularly through the area. When police signalled the vehicle to stop, the occupants attempted to flee, prompting a brief chase before all three were apprehended.
A subsequent search of the vehicle revealed multiple cartons containing foreign liquor bottles of various brands. Preliminary assessment suggests that the consignment was smuggled through border routes, a practice that continues to pose persistent challenges for law enforcement agencies in the region.
Police confirmed that the arrested individuals are residents of different parts of Sherpur district and have been taken into custody for questioning. Initial interrogation indicates that the seized alcohol was intended for distribution within the domestic market, though investigators are now working to identify the wider network behind the operation.
| Name | Age | Address | Alleged Role |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rubel Mia | 45 | Dighirpar, Jhenaigati Upazila | Occupant of pickup truck |
| Lal Chan | 23 | Ghomra village, Jhenaigati | Occupant of pickup truck |
| Alamgir | 23 | Rangtia village, Jhenaigati | Occupant of pickup truck |
Local authorities noted that despite ongoing enforcement drives, smuggling networks remain active in border-adjacent areas. The region’s geography and proximity to international boundaries have historically made it vulnerable to illicit cross-border trade, including alcohol and other contraband goods.
Officials further stated that coordinated efforts between different units of Bangladesh Police and other law enforcement agencies are being strengthened to curb such activities. Surveillance in border zones has been increased, and local communities have been urged to cooperate by providing timely information on suspicious movements.
The Officer-in-Charge of Nalitabari Police Station confirmed that a case has been filed under the Narcotics Control Act, and the accused will be produced before the court following due legal procedures. Investigators are hopeful that continued questioning will help uncover additional members of the smuggling network.
Authorities have reiterated their commitment to maintaining strict vigilance in border regions, stating that anti-smuggling operations will continue in order to disrupt organised trafficking channels and reduce associated criminal activity in the area.
