Suicide Pact Ends in Dramatic Yamuna Bridge Rescue

A suspected suicide pact between a young couple in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, took an unexpected turn after the man jumped into the Yamuna River while his companion abandoned the plan and quietly left the scene. Swift action by police officers and local rescue divers resulted in the man’s successful rescue, preventing what could have become a fatal tragedy.

The incident occurred on Thursday, 16 July, on the New Yamuna Bridge in Prayagraj. Local police identified the rescued man as Anu Gupta.

According to preliminary findings and witness accounts, the couple arrived at the bridge together, leading investigators to believe they had intended to end their lives jointly. Witnesses reported that the pair spent several minutes talking on the bridge before Anu Gupta suddenly climbed over the barrier and leapt into the river below.

His companion, however, did not follow. Instead, she reportedly watched the incident unfold from the bridge before calmly leaving the location on foot. Her decision to abandon the apparent suicide plan has become a key aspect of the ongoing investigation.

People nearby immediately alerted the authorities after seeing the man jump into the river. Police officers, assisted by local divers, reached the scene within a short time and launched an emergency rescue operation. Despite the challenges posed by the river’s current, rescuers continued their search and were ultimately able to locate and pull Gupta from the water alive.

Following the rescue, he was given immediate medical attention before being taken for further examination. Doctors later confirmed that his condition was stable. After receiving the necessary treatment and completing the required legal formalities, he was released into the care of his family. Police have since confirmed that he remains safe.

Investigators have not yet established what prompted the apparent suicide attempt. Officers are examining several possible factors, including family disputes, relationship difficulties and other forms of emotional or psychological distress. At this stage, police have not identified a definitive motive.

Efforts are also under way to identify and locate the young woman who was with Gupta at the time of the incident. Investigators believe her account will be vital in reconstructing the sequence of events and understanding what happened in the moments before the jump.

As part of the inquiry, authorities are collecting CCTV footage from the surrounding area, interviewing eyewitnesses and reviewing any other available evidence. Police said further legal action, if necessary, will depend on the findings of the investigation.
