A young police constable was found hanging inside his room at the Demra Police Lines in Dhaka, triggering concern among his colleagues and raising questions over the circumstances surrounding his sudden death. Police have launched an investigation to determine whether the incident was a case of suicide or if there were any other factors behind the death.
The deceased was identified as Constable Md Saidul Islam, son of Md Sadek of Lemua Uttar Chandrapur village in Feni Sadar upazila. He had joined the Bangladesh Police force only nine months ago, making his death particularly distressing for his family members, colleagues and fellow recruits who had recently begun their professional journey with him.
According to police sources, Saidul was found hanging inside his assigned room at a building of the Demra Police Lines at around 11:30pm on Thursday. His body was reportedly wrapped with a bedsheet. Fellow officers discovered him and immediately rescued him before taking him to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment.
As his condition deteriorated, he was transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for advanced medical care. However, after carrying out necessary examinations, doctors declared him dead.
Following the incident, police officials began an investigation and registered an unnatural death case at Demra Police Station. Investigators are questioning his colleagues, family members and others connected to the case in an effort to understand the circumstances leading to his death.
Demra Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Saifur Rahman Mirza said the initial investigation had not revealed any confirmed reason behind the constable’s death. He added that authorities were examining all possible angles, including whether the incident was linked to personal difficulties or whether there was any involvement of another person.
“Every possible aspect is being investigated. A clear picture will emerge after the completion of the inquiry,” police officials said.
Family members and police sources said Saidul had reportedly been experiencing emotional distress for some time. Relatives said he had become quieter than usual and did not communicate with others as openly as before. However, no information has so far emerged about any personal dispute or conflict involving him.
Saidul’s uncle, Md Sohag, said the young constable had been suffering from depression for several days. He added that the family was still unable to understand what exactly led to such a tragic outcome and demanded a proper investigation to uncover the truth.
The body has been kept at the Dhaka Medical College Hospital morgue for an autopsy. Police said the post-mortem report would provide further insight into the actual cause of death and help determine the next legal steps.
Sub-Inspector Md Selim of the Dhaka Medical College Hospital Police Camp confirmed that Saidul’s body had been sent to the morgue for examination. He said further action would be taken after receiving the autopsy report.
The death of the young constable, who had only recently started his career in law enforcement, has left his family and colleagues mourning. While preliminary information has pointed towards possible emotional distress, investigators said the final conclusion would be reached only after a thorough examination of all available evidence.
