BNP Issues Show-Cause Notice to Mymensingh MP Fakhruddin Ahmed

DHAKA — The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has issued a formal cause-dissenting notice, widely known as a show-cause letter, to Fakhruddin Ahmed Bachchu, the sitting Member of Parliament for the Mymensingh-11 (Bhaluka) constituency. The disciplinary action was initiated following serious allegations of breaching party discipline and the structural code of conduct.

The central office of the BNP confirmed the dispatch of the formal notice on Saturday, a development that has sent shockwaves through both the central leadership and the grassroots political landscape in Mymensingh. Senior organisational leaders stated that the party is maintaining a zero-tolerance policy against any activities that tarnish its image or compromise internal discipline during this transitional political period.

Allegations of Extortion and Local Monopoly

The high-profile disciplinary action follows a series of investigative media reports targeting the lawmaker’s conduct in his constituency. Local and national news outlets had recently published detailed accounts accusing Fakhruddin Ahmed Bachchu of establishing an unauthorised monopoly over the lucrative local industrial waste trade, locally known as the “jhut” business.

Bhaluka, being a heavily industrialised sub-district, boasts hundreds of garment factories and textile mills that generate massive economic revenue through the disposal and recycling of industrial fabric scraps. Media reports alleged that the lawmaker and his close associates systematically asserted control over these commercial contracts, displacing established local traders. Beyond the industrial waste controversy, the MP faces several other allegations of administrative irregularities, nepotism, and arbitrary interventions in local government operations, prompting widespread grievances among the regional population and dedicated party activists.

A Comprehensive Look at the Election Figures

The political turmoil surrounding the MP stands in stark contrast to his resounding victory in the Thirteenth National Parliamentary Elections. The electoral data underscores the massive public mandate he initially secured before entering the parliament, rendering the current institutional rift particularly significant for the constituency.

Fakhruddin Ahmed Bachchu secured his parliamentary seat with a commanding total of 110,214 votes, comfortably defeating his closest rival, the independent candidate Muhammad Morshed Alam, who garnered 65,591 votes. This handed the BNP candidate a definitive victory margin of 44,623 votes in the Mymensingh-11 (Bhaluka Upazila) demographics. The enforcement of this notice by the BNP Central Command Secretariat on Saturday, 18 July, highlights the changing internal landscape despite that strong electoral backing.

Party insiders reveal that the BNP high command views the allegations with utmost seriousness, as the leadership attempts to distinguish its governance from previous regimes by curbing political extortion. Fakhruddin Ahmed Bachchu has been given a strict timeframe to submit a comprehensive written explanation to the central committee. The response must clarify why formal punitive measures, including the potential suspension of his primary party membership, should not be enforced against him. Failure to provide a satisfactory defence could result in severe political consequences for the Bhaluka lawmaker.
