Trump Calls Off Planned Military Strikes on Iran Following Framework Agreement

United States President Donald Trump has announced the cancellation of planned military strikes against Iran, citing progress towards a potential diplomatic agreement aimed at resolving longstanding geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.

Writing on his social media platform, Truth Social, President Trump stated that the decision to stand down came after Iran and several Middle Eastern nations urged Washington to refrain from military action, pointing to a consensus reached on the basic framework of a new accord.

According to Trump, the proposed framework addresses two critical Western concerns: ensuring that the strategic Strait of Hormuz remains fully open to international shipping, and permanently dismantling Iran’s nuclear capabilities. The Strait of Hormuz, located between the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman, serves as one of the world’s most vital maritime oil transit chokepoints, making its security a paramount concern for global energy markets and international trade.

High-Stakes Diplomacy and Regional Dynamics

In his characteristic rhetoric, President Trump claimed that the United States military had been prepared to execute an offensive of unprecedented magnitude—describing it as the largest scale of military force readied by Washington since the Second World War. However, he maintained that a diplomatic solution remained the preferred outcome if terms could be finalised expediently.

“For the good of the World, and in the spirit of a successful and prosperous Iran, I agreed to cancel the strike, subject to a quick agreement,” Trump wrote, adding that Israel was also aligned with the decision to hold off on immediate kinetic action. He concluded his post with a call to diplomatic negotiators: “Now everybody get to work and complete the deal. Thank you.”

Tensions between Washington and Tehran have historically fluctuated around Iran’s uranium enrichment programmes, regional proxy networks, and freedom of navigation through Persian Gulf waterways. While previous diplomatic efforts, including the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), sought to curb Iran’s nuclear ambitions in exchange for sanctions relief, subsequent escalations have repeatedly brought the two nations to the brink of direct military confrontation.
