Claudio Echeverri has moved to Portuguese giants Benfica on loan from Manchester City, with the Argentina attacking midfielder hoping regular first-team football will help him fulfil the considerable potential he showed as a teenager.
Echeverri agreed a four-and-a-half-year contract with Manchester City in January 2024, but opportunities at the Premier League club have been limited. He has made just one appearance for City, while spending periods on loan in Germany and Spain. His latest move to Benfica represents another attempt to secure consistent competitive football and continue his development at senior level.
The 20-year-old has arrived in Lisbon to complete his loan move. His decision to join Benfica was reportedly encouraged by advice from Manchester City teammates Ruben Dias and Bernardo Silva, both of whom have strong connections with the Portuguese club. Their knowledge of Benfica and Portuguese football is understood to have given Echeverri useful insight as he considered his next step.
Before heading to Benfica, Echeverri spent time on loan at Bayer Leverkusen and Girona. Those spells gave him exposure to different tactical environments in European football, but he struggled to establish himself as a regular starter. Limited playing time has therefore remained a recurring issue since his move to Europe.
Benfica could offer a different opportunity. Echeverri is expected to feature in an attacking midfield role, with the number 10 shirt reportedly set to be his. The position should allow him to operate between midfield and attack, where his ability to carry the ball, create chances and contribute in front of goal can be utilised.
His reputation was established well before his arrival in European football. Echeverri became one of the standout players at the 2023 South American Under-17 Championship, scoring five goals and providing three assists. His performances helped place him among the tournament’s leading young talents and attracted considerable attention from major European clubs.
Later that year, he strengthened his reputation at the Under-17 World Cup in Indonesia. His most memorable performance came in the quarter-final against Brazil, when he scored a hat-trick in a commanding individual display. The performance underlined why Manchester City had invested in his long-term potential.
Yet success at youth level does not automatically translate into regular senior football. Echeverri’s experience at Manchester City, Bayer Leverkusen and Girona has highlighted the difficulty of breaking into established squads at elite European clubs. At Benfica, his immediate challenge will be to turn his technical ability and attacking instincts into consistent performances.
The move could prove significant for both Echeverri and Manchester City. A productive loan spell would give the Argentine valuable experience while allowing City to continue monitoring his development under competitive conditions. For the player himself, regular minutes are likely to be more important than simply being part of another prestigious squad.
After several periods on the fringes of senior teams, Echeverri now has another chance to establish himself. Benfica offers him a prominent stage, and the expectation will be clear: make the most of his opportunities, earn a regular place and show that the promise of his youth career can be translated into sustained success in senior football.
