A domestic conflict turned fatal in Cox’s Bazar as a 58-year-old man died from severe stab wounds allegedly inflicted by his son.

The victim, Abul Kashem—widely known in his local community as ‘Ledu Mistry’—succumbed to his injuries on Sunday morning, 13 September. He had been receiving intensive medical treatment at Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital following the violent assault at his family home the previous afternoon. Kashem was a resident of Hamjarchhara village, situated within the Hnila Union of Teknaf Upazila.

The conflict reportedly erupted on Saturday afternoon, 12 September, when an argument broke out between Kashem and his son, Mohammad Harun, regarding an ongoing family dispute. Witnesses and local residents stated that the verbal altercation quickly escalated into physical violence. In the heat of the argument, Harun retrieved a sharp knife from inside the house and repeatedly stabbed his father in the chest and abdomen.

Kashem collapsed at the scene with critical injuries. Neighbours rushed to his aid and immediately transported him to the Teknaf Upazila Health Complex. Medical professionals at the upazila health centre administered emergency initial care, but as his vital signs deteriorated rapidly, doctors ordered an urgent transfer to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital for specialised treatment. Despite the efforts of the medical staff, Kashem died early the next day. News of his death has cast a heavy pall of shock and grief over the entire village.

The acting chairman of Hnila Union Council, Mohammad Ali, formally confirmed Kashem’s passing. He expressed profound sadness over the tragedy, noting that while minor household disputes occur, no one in the village expected the argument to take such a lethal turn. He offered his condolences to the bereaved relatives and assured them of the local authority’s support.

Following the attack, the accused son fled the area and remains at large. The Officer-in-Charge of Teknaf Model Police Station, Saiful Islam, confirmed that law enforcement personnel visited the scene shortly after receiving the report to secure evidence and record eyewitness statements. Multiple operational units of the police have been deployed across the upazila to track down the suspect. Authorities emphasised that a thorough investigation is underway to establish the exact motives and circumstances surrounding the homicide.
