Police in Monohargonj have retrieved the heavily decomposed body of an unidentified teenager from a pond situated on abandoned residential premises in Comilla. The body was recovered at approximately 10:00 pm on Saturday, 12 September, from the North Para area of Binoyghar village under Natherpetua Union.
Officers conducted an initial inquest at the scene before transferring the remains to the Comilla Medical College Hospital morgue on Sunday morning for an autopsy and forensic examination.
The discovery unfolded on Saturday afternoon when local labourers arrived at the homestead to fell trees. Whilst moving timber along the banks of the pond, workers noticed an overpowering stench emanating from the water and spotted a bloated body trapped under dense hyacinths. The labourers alerted the authorities, prompting joint teams from the Monohargonj and neighbouring Nangalkot police stations to recover the remains.
As news of the recovery spread, a family from Tuya village in the Mokrobpur Union of Nangalkot arrived at the scene. Based on remnants of clothing on the corpse, they tentatively identified the deceased as their relative who had vanished six weeks prior along with his electric auto-rickshaw.
The grandfather of the missing teenager, Mushfiqur Rahman Mansur, stated that the body likely belongs to his 15-year-old grandson, Arman Hossain. Originally from Sylhet, Arman had been residing with his maternal grandparents in Nangalkot, earning a living driving a three-wheeled auto-rickshaw. He disappeared without a trace along with his vehicle 46 days ago.
Providing details on the ongoing investigation, Shahinur Islam, Officer-in-Charge of Nangalkot Police Station, confirmed that an abduction case had been registered following Arman’s disappearance last month. Police have already arrested three suspects in connection with that case. However, the police chief noted that it remains premature to conclusively identify the recovered body as Arman prior to forensic verification.
Maksud Ahmed, Officer-in-Charge of Monohargonj Police Station, explained that the body was in an advanced state of decomposition, indicating it had been submerged beneath the water hyacinths for over a month. Investigators have submitted formal applications for DNA profiling to verify the victim’s identity beyond doubt.
Assistant Superintendent of Police (Laksam Circle) Sanad Barua, who inspected the scene late Saturday, confirmed that murder charges are currently being drawn up at Monohargonj Police Station. Further legal action and investigative breakthroughs will depend on the autopsy findings and forensic testing.
