Police detained two Chhatra League leaders during a human chain in Madarganj upazila of Jamalpur on Thursday, as local residents gathered to protest the killing of a child named Mariyam, as well as alleged rape, drug-related activities and child abuse in the area.
The incident took place on Thursday (17 September) afternoon in Gajaria village of Adarvita Union, with the programme centred around the Bajiter Para Bazar area.
The detainees have been identified as Dipu Hasan, organisational secretary of Adarvita Union Chhatra League, and Miraj, a member of the organisation. Dipu is the son of Sohrab Ali of Gajaria village, while Miraj is the son of Abdus Salam, also from the same village.
According to local residents, the human chain was organised under the banner of a social organisation called ‘Jubo Samaj’. People from the surrounding area joined the programme to express their concerns over the recent killing of child Mariyam and other alleged offences reported in the locality.
The protesters raised demands for justice over Mariyam’s death and called for action against rape, drug-related activities and violence against children. The programme also reflected concerns among residents about the safety of children and the need for effective measures to address criminal activities in the area.
Police were present during the gathering and detained Dipu Hasan and Miraj from the programme.
Madarganj Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Snehashish Ray said a procession had been organised under the leadership of Chhatra League demanding justice for Mariyam’s killing. He said participants in the procession chanted slogans including ‘Joy Bangla, Joy Bangabandhu’.
The OC said the two individuals were subsequently detained from the procession. Police were also deployed at the scene to maintain law and order and prevent any disruption following the incident.
The detention occurred as local residents were publicly voicing concerns about the recent death of Mariyam and other issues affecting the community. The human chain brought together people seeking action over alleged crimes involving women and children, as well as measures to address drug-related problems.
