Momen urges int’l community to take collective action over climate-induced migration, Dr. AK Abdul Momen, the foreign minister of Bangladesh, has urged the international community to act jointly to include the issue of migration caused by climate change in climate change negotiations. An event titled “Human Mobility in the Context of Climate Change: Building a Positive Narrative on Migration and Climate Action” was held on the sidelines of COP 27 in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt, on Monday, and in his opening remarks, he emphasized this point, according to a press release issued here today.

High-level representatives from State Party delegations, development partners, international organizations, academia, and civil societies came together for the event, which was jointly organized by the Government of Bangladesh, the International Organization for Migration (IOM), and the Climate Vulnerable Forum (CVF), to discuss issues of human mobility brought on by climate change impacts.

Henry Kwabena Kokofu, Special Envoy for Ghana’s Presidency of CVF, Ugochi Daniels, Deputy Director General for Operations at IOM, and Alfred Okot Okidi, Permanent Secretary for Water and Environment of the Republic of Uganda, were among those who spoke at the occasion. The closing remarks were made by Ambassador Md. Abdul Muhith, Permanent Representative of Bangladesh to the UN in New York.

Earlier in the day, Foreign Minister Momen was present at the launching event of the Global Shield against Climate Risks, an initiative led by the Vulnerable 20 Group of Finance Ministers (V20) and the Group of Seven (G7) for financial support designed to be quickly deployed in times of climate disasters.

Speaking at the event, Foreign Minister called on the G7 to mobilize new and additional resources towards the Global Shield, going beyond the financing commitments made under the Paris Agreement. Later in the afternoon, Foreign Minister Dr Momen spoke at the soft launch of the International Panel on Deltas and Coastal Zones at the Dutch Pavilon where Dhaka joined the ‘Champions Group for Deltas and Coastal Zones’ at the invitation of the Netherlands.

“We must work on fostering multi-stakeholder partnerships with open, transparent and collaborative approaches to tackling complex climate challenges affecting our deltas and coastal areas,” Dr Momen said. He also reiterated Bangladesh’s commitment to work together with the Netherlands and other deltaic countries within the framework of the International Delta Coalition.

Momen also expressed his gratitude to the Dutch government for providing technical support for the creation of the Bangladesh Delta Plan 2100. Ministers from the Netherlands and Egypt among others were present at the event.
