Police in Satkhira have arrested four leaders of the Awami League in connection with a case involving allegations of sabotage. The four were detained during an operation in the Sultanpur area of Satkhira town on Saturday, 15 August, and were subsequently produced before a court, which ordered that they be sent to jail.
The arrested individuals are Kazi Akhtar Hossain, organisational secretary of the Satkhira district Awami League; Master Shafiqul Islam, a member of the Kaliganj upazila Awami League and former Youth League leader; Alamgir Hossain, general secretary of the district Tanti League; and Sheikh Mostafizur Rahman Shovon, former president of the Satkhira municipal Chhatra League.
According to police, an operation was conducted in Sultanpur on Saturday, during which the four men were taken into custody. Following the initial legal procedures, they were shown as arrested in the relevant case and taken before the court. The court subsequently directed that they be remanded to jail custody.
Masudur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Satkhira Sadar Police Station, said all four were accused in a sabotage case. However, police did not immediately provide detailed information about the specific allegations or the nature of the alleged acts of sabotage cited in the case.
The arrests have drawn attention because all four men have held organisational positions within the Awami League or its affiliated bodies. Kazi Akhtar Hossain served in an organisational role at district level, while Shafiqul Islam was involved in both the Kaliganj upazila Awami League and Youth League politics. Alamgir Hossain has been associated with the district Tanti League, and Shovon previously led the municipal Chhatra League.
Their arrests come amid continued legal action in Satkhira against individuals facing allegations in politically related cases. Such cases can involve a range of accusations, including disruption of public order, damage to property or other forms of alleged unlawful activity. The precise circumstances, however, have to be established through investigation and judicial proceedings.
Police said legal action in the sabotage case was being taken in accordance with the law. No immediate statement was available from the arrested leaders or their representatives regarding the allegations against them.
An arrest in connection with a criminal case does not, by itself, establish guilt. The allegations must be examined through investigation, evidence and the judicial process, with the court ultimately determining whether the charges are proved.
With the four men sent to jail following Saturday’s court proceedings, the immediate phase of the arrest operation has ended. The next steps will depend on the progress of the investigation and subsequent hearings in the case.
