Man Detained Following Assault on Disabled Minor
A 21-year-old man has been remanded in custody following the harrowing sexual assault of a 13-year-old girl with speech and hearing impairments in the Sunamganj district of Bangladesh. The suspect, identified as Mostakim Mia, was apprehended by local authorities in Jagannathpur and produced before the Sunamganj court on Sunday, 16 November, where he was subsequently ordered to be held in jail pending further proceedings.
Details of the Incident
The distressing event reportedly took place on the night of Thursday, 13 November. According to police reports and the formal complaint, the young victim had stepped outside her family home to use the facilities. It is alleged that the suspect, a neighbour identified as the son of Nazrul Mia from the nearby Bhatgaon village in Chhatak upazila, intercepted the child.
Exploiting the cover of darkness and the child’s vulnerability, the assailant reportedly forced her into an outdoor toilet where the assault occurred. Despite her disabilities, the victim managed to alert her family through her screams. Terrified by the commotion and the arrival of the girl’s relatives, the perpetrator fled the scene to seek refuge in his own residence.
Legal Action and Arrest
Upon discovering the victim in a state of extreme distress, her family sought to understand the events through her use of sign language and gestures. On Friday, the victim’s elder brother took decisive action by lodging a formal complaint at the Jagannathpur Police Station.
A case was officially registered on Saturday, 15 November, under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act, a stringent piece of legislation designed to fast-track justice for victims of gender-based and domestic violence.
The Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Jagannathpur Police Station, Mahfuz Imtiaz Bhuiyan, confirmed that the police acted swiftly following the filing of the First Information Report (FIR). “Our officers moved immediately to secure the suspect,” the OC stated. “Following his arrest, he was presented before the judiciary and has been sent to prison.”

Community Reaction
The incident has sparked significant outrage within the Bhatgaon village community and the wider Jagannathpur area. Local advocates for the disabled have called for a rigorous prosecution, noting that the victim’s inability to speak makes her an especially vulnerable target for such predatory behaviour.
The victim is expected to undergo medical examinations to provide forensic evidence for the prosecution’s case. Authorities have assured the family that the investigation will be conducted with the sensitivity required for a minor with special needs, ensuring that her testimony—delivered through gesture and specialist interpretation—is fully integrated into the legal process.
