Tourist Appeal of Rangamati’s Hanging Bridge is Fading

The hanging bridge in Tablachhari over Kaptai Lake, once one of Bangladesh’s most iconic tourist attractions, has seen a decline in popularity in recent years. With the emergence of new resorts, scenic spots, and recreational facilities in and around Rangamati, the bridge now struggles to attract visitors.

Tourists visiting the region noted that despite staying in Rangamati for several days, many chose to skip the bridge entirely. “We stayed here for three days but didn’t visit the bridge. Other attractions offered more to see and do, while the bridge feels more like a brief stop,” said one visitor. The lack of recreational facilities around the bridge has been cited as a major factor limiting its appeal.

Constructed in 1986 by the Bangladesh Tourism Corporation, the hanging bridge is supported by two sturdy pillars nestled between hills, offering panoramic views of Kaptai Lake. During the winter season, daily footfall ranges from 1,000 to 1,500 tourists. However, during the rainy season, parts of the bridge are often submerged, further deterring visitors.

Recognising the bridge’s untapped potential, the Bangladesh Tourism Corporation has outlined plans to revitalise the site and enhance its aesthetic and recreational appeal. Proposed initiatives include the construction of a new hanging bridge nearby, designed to offer improved safety, scenic viewpoints, and accessibility. In addition, plans are underway to enable evening visits, allowing tourists to enjoy sunset views over the lake.

Officials hope that these developments will not only increase visitor numbers but also create new employment opportunities for local communities, boosting the regional economy. The plans aim to balance tourism growth with environmental preservation, ensuring that the area’s natural beauty remains intact while modern facilities are introduced.
