Shakib Khan Steps Down from Dhaka Capitals Ownership

Last season, Shakib Khan, Bangladesh’s celebrated film star, made headlines as the owner of the Dhaka Capitals in the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL). While the franchise did not claim the title, fans enjoyed the actor’s consistent presence in the stands, creating a distinctive bridge between cricket and cinema enthusiasts. His involvement was widely regarded as smooth and professional, with no controversies reported regarding player acquisitions or team management. Despite the team’s modest on-field performance, Shakib Khan earned admiration for his hands-on approach and visible support for his players.

However, ahead of the 12th edition of the BPL, it has now been confirmed that Shakib Khan is no longer associated with the Dhaka Capitals. The player auction, held on Sunday at the Radisson Hotel in Dhaka, saw six franchises preparing for the tournament: Dhaka Capitals, Sylhet Titans, Rangpur Riders, Noakhali Express, Rajshahi Warriors, and Chattogram Royals. Notably, Noakhali Express is entering the BPL for the first time.

Last year, Shakib attended the auction personally, assuring fans and stakeholders that the Capitals would become stronger, more aggressive, and championship-ready. This season, however, his absence has been a focal point of discussion among fans and media alike. Sources within the franchise confirmed that ownership has changed hands: previously under Remark Harlan, the team is now owned by Champion Sports. While the Dhaka Capitals have renewed their contract with the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), Shakib Khan is no longer involved in any managerial or ownership capacity.

SK Films, Shakib Khan’s company, clarified that the actor had stepped down from his role as a director at Remark Harlan long ago and currently holds no position within the franchise. Despite his absence, Shakib remains a prominent figure in Bangladeshi sports circles due to his prior engagement and influence in last season’s BPL.

The 12th BPL season is scheduled to begin on 26 December, culminating with the final on 23 January. Fans will be watching closely to see how Dhaka Capitals perform under new ownership and without the star presence of King Khan.
