Rediscovering the Voice Behind ‘Sunil–Boruna’

Mahadi Faisal, the voice behind the iconic track “Tumi Boruna Hole Hob Ami Sunil,” remains one of Bangladesh’s most beloved singers. Though his presence in the limelight waned for several years, he has never truly stopped working. Today, Mahadi is preparing for a creative resurgence, with a new song slated for release by year-end and plans to explore the timeless compositions of Kazi Nazrul Islam.

Mahadi first emerged in the national spotlight in 1995, achieving third place in the devotional song category at the ‘Notun Kuri’ competition. The following year, he won first prize in folk music at the National Education Week. In 2005, encouraged by friends and teachers, he entered the reality show ‘Close Up One.’ Over several episodes, he progressed to the Top Eleven. While he did not make the final Top Ten, Mahadi had already become a household name. Fans lined the streets of his hometown for autographs, and local posters celebrated his rising stardom.

The release of his first solo album, Bondona (2007), marked a turning point. “Sunil–Boruna,” penned by Asif Iqbal and composed by Prince Mahmud, earned widespread acclaim and a Citycell–Channel i Music Award. Mahadi notes, “My recognition on ‘Close Up One’ was built on cover songs, but ‘Sunil–Boruna’ defined me as an artist through my original music.”

Collaborations with Elita, including the 2009 duet album Ontohin and later releases Onnorokom (2011) and Chol Ontohin (2015), further solidified his position. Despite shifts in the audio industry and the decline of album production, Mahadi adapted by releasing single tracks on digital platforms. During the pandemic, he led a project featuring nearly 300 artists for the motivational song Eso Shobai, which he also executive produced. His recent work, including Jokhon Juddhe Achi, Keu Bozhe To Keu Bozhe Na, and Koto Kache Tomar, demonstrates his continued relevance.

Outside the music scene, Mahadi balances a corporate career with family life. He married Arifa Rahman in 2010, and their daughter, Yuwena Fatiha, was born in 2015. Currently based in Dhaka, Mahadi is preparing to release a new track by the end of the year and is actively working on several Nazrul Sangeet projects. With decades of experience and a renewed creative drive, Mahadi Faisal is ready to reclaim his place in Bangladesh’s music scene.
