Nation Commemorates Heroes on 54th Bangladesh Victory Day

Today, Bangladesh observes a day of enduring national pride and solemn reflection: Victory Day, commemorating the nation’s ultimate triumph in the Liberation War of 1971. On 16 December 1971, after nine months of fierce struggle, Bangladeshi forces achieved a decisive victory, ending the brutal oppression of West Pakistan and securing the country’s independence. The 54th Victory Day is celebrated with a blend of joy, national pride, and poignant remembrance of the countless martyrs who sacrificed their lives.

From the early hours, throngs of citizens are expected to converge on the National Martyrs’ Memorial in Savar, paying homage to those who laid down their lives for the country. The ceremony will be attended by President Md. Sahabuddin, Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus, advisers, freedom fighters, diplomats, and leaders from political parties, alongside citizens of all ages. The red-and-green national flag, earned through immense sacrifice, will fly prominently at all official events.

Across the country, Victory Day will be marked by civic ceremonies, cultural programmes, and official government observances. It is a public holiday, allowing the nation to collectively honour its hard-won freedom.

Bangladesh’s path to independence was born from prolonged oppression under the Pakistani state, established post-British colonial rule along the lines of the two-nation theory. West Pakistan’s repeated exploitation, deprivation, and cultural suppression of the Bengali population—including attacks on language and heritage—ignited the struggle for autonomy, which ultimately evolved into a full-scale liberation movement. On the night of 25 March 1971, the Pakistani military unleashed a campaign of mass violence against unarmed civilians, an atrocity that remains deeply etched in history. The heroic resistance of the Bengali people over the next nine months culminated in independence, at the cost of three million lives, two million women’s dignity, and vast national resources.

In separate messages on the occasion of Victory Day, President Md. Sahabuddin and Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus extended warm congratulations to citizens at home and abroad, and paid profound tribute to the martyrs and freedom fighters. The President emphasised that the day represents national pride and the ultimate success of independence, calling for the strengthening of democracy, tolerance, mutual respect, and unity across society.

Chief Adviser Yunus urged the nation to draw inspiration from the Liberation War, advocating for citizen empowerment, democratic advancement, and the creation of a just, corruption-free society. He appealed for collective effort, transcending religion, ethnicity, and social groupings, to build a safe, prosperous, and beautiful Bangladesh for future generations.
