Life in Bogura has been severely disrupted as dense fog and biting cold winds grip the district, pushing temperatures to their lowest level of the current winter season. The sudden intensification of cold weather has caused widespread hardship, particularly among low-income communities who are struggling to cope with the plunging temperatures.
On Sunday morning, 21 December, the Bangladesh Meteorological Department recorded a minimum temperature of 13.2 degrees Celsius in Bogura—the lowest this season. Just a day earlier, on Saturday, the minimum temperature stood at 14.8 degrees Celsius, highlighting a sharp overnight drop that has heightened the chill across the region.
Since early morning, thick fog has enveloped both urban and rural areas, significantly reducing visibility and disrupting normal activities. Many residents have been seen lighting small fires with straw, paper, and discarded materials along roadsides to keep warm. Until the sun makes an appearance, movement outside homes has remained limited, with elderly people, children, and those suffering from illness particularly vulnerable to the cold.
Although the sun briefly appeared around midday, it quickly disappeared behind cloud cover, offering little relief. Even during daylight hours, drivers on major highways were forced to keep their headlights switched on due to poor visibility caused by persistent fog.
The harsh weather has taken a toll on daily wage earners. Hurmut Ali, a boatman at the Sariakandi ferry ghat, described the situation as extremely challenging. “In this fog, we can barely see anything on the river,” he said. “The cold wind makes the body shiver, and very few passengers are willing to cross. Our earnings have dropped sharply.”
Rickshaw pullers are facing similar difficulties. Jamal Mia, who operates a rickshaw in Bogura town, explained that despite the bitter cold, staying home is not an option. “No matter how cold it gets, I must go out to earn,” he said. “If I do not pull the rickshaw, how will my family eat?”
According to Shahiduzzaman Sarkar, Senior Observer at the Bogura Meteorological Office, the cold conditions are expected to persist for several more days. “The minimum temperature recorded this morning was 13.2 degrees Celsius, which is the lowest this winter so far. The sky remains cloudy, and cold winds are continuing. The intensity of winter may increase further,” he warned.
Health experts have advised residents to take precautions, particularly during early morning and late-night hours, when temperatures tend to drop further. Charitable organisations and local authorities have also been urged to step up the distribution of warm clothing to protect the most vulnerable sections of society.
