Bangladesh has initiated discussions with Pakistan regarding the potential acquisition of advanced fighter aircraft, marking a significant step in the country’s ongoing military modernisation efforts. The talks, conducted during a recent meeting between the air chiefs of both nations in Pakistan, focused on operational capabilities, training collaboration, and long-term defence cooperation, according to Pakistan’s Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) and local media outlet Dawn.
The aircraft under consideration is the JF-17 Thunder, a lightweight, multirole combat jet jointly developed by China and Pakistan. The jet has seen operational deployment in past conflicts, including reported engagements during the Indo-Pak clashes in 2019 and 2025. Bangladesh is currently in the evaluation phase, assessing both the technical suitability and strategic implications of acquiring the aircraft.
Lieutenant Colonel Sami-ud-Daula Chowdhury, Director of Bangladesh’s Inter-Services Public Relations Department, confirmed, “The matter is being reviewed in detail. No final decision has been made at this stage.”
During the high-level meeting, discussions also encompassed enhanced training programmes, capacity building, and potential cooperation in space technology. Pakistan Air Force (PAF) Chief Air Chief Marshal Zahid Ahmed Babar Sidhu briefed his Bangladeshi counterpart, Air Chief Marshal Hasan Mahmud Khan, on recent PAF advancements and the benefits of its structured training ecosystem. PAF offered accelerated delivery of Super Mushshak training aircraft for Bangladesh, along with long-term technical and operational support.
The Bangladeshi delegation toured key PAF installations, evaluating operational readiness and maintenance protocols. At Bangladesh’s request, Pakistan agreed to provide support for integrating air defence radar systems to enhance monitoring and upkeep of the existing fleet.
The visit underscores the historical strategic partnership between the two countries while signalling a commitment to deepen defence, technical, and technological collaboration. The discussions highlighted not only immediate procurement possibilities but also long-term integrated strategic planning across operational, training, and aerospace domains.
Key points from the discussions are summarised below:
