Fourteen years have passed since the tragic killing of 15-year-old Felani Khatun, yet justice for her death remains elusive. Her family continues to fight tirelessly for accountability, living with the enduring pain of a crime that has never been legally resolved. In a somber reflection, her father, Nurul Islam, expressed, “We have petitioned both Indian and Bangladeshi courts countless times, but justice remains out of reach. Whatever government comes to power, I want Felani’s killers to be properly tried. My heart will not find peace until justice is served.”
On 7 January 2011, Felani was shot dead by Indian Border Security Force (BSF) personnel, reportedly by constable Amit Ghosh, while attempting to cross the Bird-War border. She was with her father at the time, returning home after arranging her marriage. Following the shooting, her body remained suspended in the barbed wire for five hours, an image that drew widespread attention from international media and highlighted human rights concerns along the border.
Nurul Islam recounted the day with sorrow: “Our family had gone to India in search of work. Felani’s wedding arrangements had been completed, and we were returning home when this tragic event occurred.” Her mother, Jahanara Begum, added, “The BSF took my daughter’s life, leaving a void that can never be filled. Fourteen years have passed, yet justice remains unfulfilled. I still hope the truth will prevail, and the guilty will be punished.”
Legal proceedings have been painfully slow. The first trial began on 13 August 2013 at a special BSF court in Cooch Behar, India. On 6 September 2013, Amit Ghosh was acquitted. Despite Bangladesh’s border authorities objecting, the case was reopened on 22 September 2014, yet Ghosh was acquitted again.
On 14 July 2015, Nurul Islam filed a writ petition in the Indian High Court through the human rights organisation Masum. Multiple hearings have followed, but the case remains unresolved to this day.
Felani Khatun, born in 1996, was the eldest of eight children. At the time of her death, she was living with her family in India and returning home for her planned marriage when her life was brutally cut short.
