Pedestrian Killed in Microbus Collision at Khilgaon

A tragic road accident in Dhaka’s Khilgaon area claimed the life of a local fish vendor, Chandan Das, aged 55, on Wednesday. The incident occurred at approximately 11:15 a.m. on the busy 300-foot road in Khilgaon when a speeding microbus struck him while he was crossing the street.

Eyewitnesses reported that Chandan Das was attempting to cross the road when the microbus, operated by the July Shahid Smriti Foundation, hit him. Local residents immediately rushed to his aid, transporting him first to Kurmitola General Hospital. Due to the severity of his injuries, he was subsequently transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), where emergency doctors pronounced him dead.

Neighbour and family friend, Md. Nazrul Islam, recounted the harrowing moment: “Chandan Das was thrown onto the road and suffered severe injuries. Local people and the microbus assistant acted quickly to get him to hospital, but sadly it was too late.”

Inspector Md. Faruk, in charge of the DMCH hospital police camp, confirmed: “The body has been kept in the morgue. The Khilgaon Police Station has been notified. The microbus involved and its driver are currently in police custody.”

Chandan Das hailed from Kachua Upazila in Brahmanbaria district. He had been living with his family in a rented residence near Kurmitola School, Khilgaon, and earned his livelihood as a fish vendor.

This accident occurred in one of Dhaka’s most congested and high-traffic areas, once again highlighting the urgent need for improved road safety measures and better regulation of speeding vehicles. Locals emphasise that the lack of designated pedestrian crossings and insufficient traffic control are major contributors to such preventable tragedies.
