Child Dies After Falling Into Flooded Drain

A tragic accident in Cumilla city has claimed the life of a young child after he reportedly fell into an uncovered and hazardous roadside drain concealed beneath floodwater following heavy rainfall. The incident, which occurred in the Chotora Paschimpara Eidgah area on Sunday night, has sparked widespread concern among residents over urban safety, drainage maintenance, and public infrastructure management.

According to local accounts, persistent rainfall across various parts of Cumilla on Sunday led to significant waterlogging on roads and footpaths. At around 9:00 pm, an eight- to ten-year-old child was walking with his mother along a footpath constructed above a roadside drain in the Chotora Paschimpara Eidgah neighbourhood. Unbeknownst to them, a damaged section of the drain covering had been submerged beneath accumulated rainwater.

Residents said the broken slab created an opening that was impossible to detect because of the standing water. As the child proceeded along the footpath, he reportedly slipped through the concealed gap and was swept into the drain by the force of the flowing water.

The incident immediately triggered panic among nearby residents, many of whom rushed to the scene and began searching for the child. Witnesses stated that a large crowd gathered within minutes. After approximately 10 to 15 minutes of searching, rescuers noticed a hand trapped inside the drainage channel some distance from where the child had fallen.
