Gazipur, Bangladesh – In a brazen daylight incident, an NCIP worker narrowly escaped a gun attack while his motorcycle was stolen by two assailants. The incident occurred today, Thursday, at around 12:30 pm in the Jogitola area of Gazipur city.
The victim has been identified as Habib Chowdhury, 25, a resident of Mugur Khal (71 Goli), under Basan Police Station in Gazipur city. His family hails from Brahmanbauga village in Sonargaon Upazila, Narayanganj district. Habib is an active member of the NCIP and has been involved in local political activities.
According to police reports and eyewitness accounts, Habib had advertised an old motorcycle for sale. Around midday, two men approached him, expressing interest in purchasing the vehicle. During the meeting, one of the men asked to test the motorcycle. As he started it, the second assailant allegedly fired two shots at Habib. Fortunately, the bullets missed, narrowly passing by his ear. Both men then fled the scene with the motorcycle.
Habib Chowdhury described the incident, saying:
“They approached me under the pretext of buying my motorcycle. While one pretended to test ride it, the other suddenly fired at me. Luckily, I was unharmed; the bullets passed just by my ear.”
Following the attack, NCIP central leader Ali Nas expressed his concern during a Facebook Live broadcast, stating that Habib, a July activist and courageous party member, had been deliberately targeted. He warned that participants in the July mass movement were not safe, asserting that the state had failed to provide adequate security. Ali Nas gave authorities a 12-hour ultimatum to bring the perpetrators to justice.
Gazipur Metropolitan Police Additional Commissioner for Crime and Operations, Taherul Haque Chauhan, confirmed to media that the attack stemmed from a motorcycle sale arrangement. He emphasised that Habib had narrowly escaped being shot and added that a manhunt for the suspects was already underway. Chauhan expressed hope that the perpetrators would soon be apprehended.
